Genomics Laboratory Training Manager (Scientific)

Job summary

The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory (CUH) is pleased to be recruiting a Training Manager to ensure that the Scientific Staff support the Laboratory's aims by providing a professionally competent workforce, while also enabling the Scientific Staff to develop their careers within the Laboratory.

The Training Manager (Scientific Programme) will be responsible for developing scientists for them to attain registration with the either the IBMS or the AHCS, and to achieve higher level professional qualifications. The Training Manager will need to prioritise training availability. You will need to develop SOPs and policies in order to ensure a consistent approach to opportunities is provided.

As the Training Manager will be responsible for ensuring the Laboratory maintains its Training Competency, you must be a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist.

As the lead laboratory of the East Genomic Laboratory Hub, the Cambridge Laboratory has a critical role in the delivery of genomic services to a population of over 8 million people. Main duties of the job

Responsible as Training Manager (Scientific) in collaboration with the GLH Education and Training Lead, for all scientific training within the laboratory environment. Co-operate with the Training Manager (Technical) to ensure education and training provision for all support roles.

Develop and manage the scientific training programme for new and current staff. Develop and manage resources for education and engagement, which may be external to the laboratory.

Manage staff training in order to achieve HCPC registration and higher-level qualifications for staff in relevant posts via: the STP and pre-registration programmes for Clinical Scientists, the HSST programme, FRCPath training, IBMS Certificate of Competence for HCPC Registration and the IBMS specialist portfolio in Molecular Pathology.

Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the professional accreditation for training status of the GLH.

Responsible for maintaining individual professional registration.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • Degree (first or second class with Honours or higher degree) preferably science related.
  • Postgraduate qualification in a genomic related subject.
  • HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist, or nearing registration.
  • Post graduate qualification in education or training, or equivalent experience.

Experience

Essential
  • Experience of developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Experience of supervising trainees.
  • Experience of working in a clinical genomics laboratory or delivering training in a related field
  • Proven record of CPD.

Knowledge

Essential
  • Understands the principles for genomics and the role it plays in patient pathways.
  • Detailed knowledge of training delivery in a diagnostic laboratory; A knowledge of education and training theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of the different routes to HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist and Biomedical Scientist; Knowledge of the wider training programmes available to the scientific workforce.

Skills

Essential
  • Ability to communicate complex information in both verbal and written formats to varied clinical or non-clinical audiences with a broad range of skills, knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to show initiative to identify and create solutions to problems and challenges
  • Ability to gather and assimilate information i.e. use of internet, networks, professional bodies and relevant databases; To seek out, establish and maintain networks and contacts.
  • Computer literacy is essential including word processing, email and spread sheets; Accurate record keeping with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines; Self-motivated; Able to inspire and motivate others.
  • Evidence of ability to supervise and manage a range of projects simultaneously; Evidence of the ability to plan, manage and organise own time effectively; Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
