NDA Cyber Security Apprentice - Level 4

A Level 4 NDA Cyber Security Apprentice is required. This apprenticeship will cover a broad range of core technical competencies and provide you with the technical knowledge to be an effective within your role. The role involves following organisational policies and standards for information and cyber security and operating according to service level agreements or employer defined performance targets.

Role

During this apprenticeship you will develop the following technical competencies:

  • Discovering (through a mix of research and practical exploration) vulnerabilities in a system
  • Analysing and evaluating security threats and hazards to a system or service or processes
  • Researching and investigating some common attack techniques and recommending how to defend against them
  • Undertaking a security risk assessment for a simple system and proposing basic remediation advice
  • Sourcing and analysing a security case (e.g. a Common Criteria Protection Profile for a security component) and describing what threats, vulnerabilities or risks are mitigated and identifying any residual areas of concern
  • Developing a simple security case without supervision
  • Identifying and following organisational policies and standards for information and cyber security and operating according to service level agreements or employer-defined performance targets

Technical Knowledge and Understanding:

In addition, this apprenticeship will teach you about-

  • The importance of Cyber Security to business and society
  • Concepts such as security, identity, confidentiality, integrity, availability, threat, vulnerability, risk and hazard, and also how these relate to each other and lead to risk and harm
  • Security assurance concepts and how assurance may be achieved in practice (e.g. penetration testing and extrinsic assurance methods)
  • Building a security case - deriving security objectives with reasoned justification in a representative business scenario
  • Cyber security concepts applied to ICT infrastructure – can describe the fundamental building blocks and typical architectures and identify some common vulnerabilities in networks and systems
  • A range of attack techniques and sources of threat
  • The principles of cyber defence, developing your ability to describe ways to defend against attack techniques
  • Relevant laws and ethics and development and understanding of the role of criminals and other UK and international laws
  • The existing threat landscape, developing your ability to describe and apply relevant techniques for horizon scanning
  • Threat trends – developing your ability to describe the significance of identified trends in cyber security and understand the value and risk of this analysis
  • The importance of ensuring compliance with GDPR (Data Protection).

Training

For the duration of your 24-month apprenticeship you will work on behalf of NDA, while being employed by Energus

  • Functional Skills in maths and English, if required
  • Cyber security technologist (2021) Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard

You will undertake a variety of tasks and processes within the team, developing your overall business knowledge.
