About us

The NHS Suffolk and North-East Essex Integrated Care Board (ICB) plans and buys healthcare services for our population. This function is commonly referred to as commissioning.

To do this, we work within a budget of around £1.5 billion, which is set by NHS England, and work closely with local government and the NHS providers in our area. Our performance is judged by how well our local health and care system as a whole is working, including the health outcomes of our communities.

The ICB has delegated some authority to the three health and wellbeing alliances that operate in Suffolk and North-East Essex to act on its behalf. This is to ensure that the needs of smaller, local areas are addressed. The ICB remains accountable for all of its functions, including those it has delegated.

Local residents have a big role to play in the operation of the ICB. We rely on the experiences and perspectives of our communities to help shape our decision-making.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This post is intended to support our ambition to build a culture of innovation across Suffolk and North East Essex ICS that is responsive to those in most need in the communities that it serves.

The aim is to create a culture where our workforce, from all system partners, understand how doing things differently can solve their current challenges and they feel empowered to seek out innovations to support them in their work as a matter of course. We also want the ICS to be an investable proposition where health and life sciences innovators can work to gain real world evidence to further the adoption and spread of their solutions. By creating a culture where health and care professionals and innovators work much more closely together, we aim to improve the care and health outcomes that we deliver for our patients, support our innovators to develop and implement their solutions and, in particular, to reduce the health inequity across our ICS.

The ICB has built strong foundations for the innovation programme, including the adoption and spread of many noteworthy innovations that have already made a difference. You can read about our achievements on NHS Englands website here.

The postholder will be required to work extensively with local systems partners, including Health Innovation East and the Integrated Care Academy. The post holder will have full access to support from the team at Health Innovation East. They will be able to draw on the range of proven innovations and implementation techniques developed by Health Innovation East and the national Health Innovation Network of which it is a part. In addition, the postholder will work in collaboration with the Integrated Care Academy, which is a unique local partnership providing education, training and development, workforce and leadership transformation, technology and innovation, and research and evidence to help local services provide better joined up care to keep people healthy and independent for as long as possible.

The role will be part of the Strategy and Transformation Directorate in the ICB, with direct reporting line in to the Director of the Integrated Care Academy. The role will not directly manage anyone but will work across different individuals and teams across the ICB and wider system partners in the ICS to deliver the duties of the role.
