Job summary

We're seeking a Consultant Stroke Physician to become part of our evolving stroke department at North Bristol NHS Trust to contribute to the growth and strategic development of our services.

Our focus is on driving improvement within acute stroke services for Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG), alongside extending support to the wider Severn Region and beyond, encompassing advanced procedures like Mechanical Thrombectomy (which is performed 24/7).

Since May 2023, our Comprehensive Stroke Centre, based at the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital is at the centre of stroke care in the region with expansion of our hyperacute stroke unit (HASU) and acute stroke unit (ASU).

The successful candidate will have responsibilities that include supporting the delivery of acute services, involvement in Mon-Fri transient ischaemic attack (TIA) clinics, and handling ward referrals at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Additionally, participation in bi-weekly ward consultant rounds at the Stroke Sub Acute Rehab Units (SSARU's) located at South Bristol Community Hospital and/or Weston General Hospital will be expected.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties

- management of acute admissions - thrombolysis and thrombectomy.

-supervising the care of all patients in HASU and ASU, along with colleagues providing continuity of care for patients

-providing bi-weekly Consultant level input to patients cared for in the SSARU's at Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital

- delivery of TIA (at Bristol Royal Infirmary) / neurovascular outpatient clinics

Supervision and education

- clinical and educational supervision of juniors including senior clinical fellows

- contribution to training and education of the stroke team

About us

The Stroke Department is a major part of the Regional Neurosciences Centre. It provides inpatient and outpatients specialist stroke services including:

  • 24hr acute thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy
  • Hyperacute and acute stroke care
  • TIA clinics at Bristol Royal Infirmary
  • Sub acute stroke rehabilitation at South Bristol Community Hospital and Weston General Hospital

The Stroke Department provides all stroke services within NBT, currently with a team of 16 consultants from a combination of Neurology, Acute Medical and Care of the Elderly backgrounds leading the Trust's Comprehensive Stroke Centre including both acute and rehabilitation services.

Hyperacute and acute services are supported 24/7 by a specialist team of experienced Stroke Advanced Nurse Practitioners. We also have invested in Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and Physician Associates.

The successful applicant will be a team player, and be willing to work flexibly to provide cover for the other consultants who cover the Stroke Services.

The successful applicant can be from any parent speciality, but must have experience in stroke care. The job plan and clinic commitment will be adapted to be suitable to the appointee. Please discuss interests with our Specialty Lead - neurology, care of the elderly and acute medicine PAs may form part of the job plan for the successful candidates.

The essential requirement is that the appointee be expert in and committed to the care and management of people with stroke in all phases of their care, be committed to helping building a stroke centre of excellence both in patient care and research.

Person Specification

Qualification and Registration

Essential
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC
  • GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment
Desirable
  • Higher academic qualification e.g. PhD / MD
  • CCT in Stroke Medicine

Training + Experience

Essential
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain UK CCT in General and Geriatric Medicine or Neurology or Acute Medicine
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular conditions
Desirable
  • Training and Experience of management of spasticity including administration of botulinum toxin

Essential
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career
  • Experience in audit project and written up
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
Desirable
  • Completion of a general management course or programme

Essential
  • Proven teaching ability.
  • Willingness to undertake teaching of medical undergrads and postgrads
  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients

  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management
