The Pharmacy Department at Royal Cornwall Hospital is delighted to be able to offer this exciting position in our Digital Medicines team. The award winning RCHT Digital Medicines team is one of the national leaders in digital pharmacy systems and has successfully rolled out our EPMA solution across Cornwall in a unique partnership with our sister Trust.

The Trust is about to embark on the implementation of its new Electronic Patient Record (EPR). This challenging programme is the largest clinical system transformation programme the Trust has undertaken and is key to the Trust's Strategy and aims to fundamentally transform ways of working.

Main duties of the job

This role supports the Digital Medicines team in maintaining a wide range of systems including general and specialist electronic prescribing systems, automated drug cabinets, prescription tracking and robotic dispensing systems. The successful candidate will play key roles in developing and testing new systems to support closed loop administration and supply of medicines. The Digital Medicines team will be working closely with other clinical teams and Cornwall IT Services to implement a new EPR across Cornwall over the next 2 years.

We are a recognised national leader for innovation in fields such as antimicrobial resistance and the adoption of Scan4Safety standards. All these functions are supported by an excellent wholesale dealer supply service, a well-equipped licensed pharmacy technical services unit and the full range of medicines optimisation support services including medicines information, education and training, formulary support and digital medicines. We recently had funding for a new pharmacy department confirmed as part of an exciting investment which includes a new Women's and Children's hospital.

We are recruiting for 2 full time positions; 1 x Permanent and 1 x Fixed Term Position. Duration of FT contract is dependant on start date will end 30 September 2025.

Job Purpose

Act as a Digital Medicines specialist, maintain and develop high quality, consistent, patient-focused services to system users in conjunction other Digital Medicines staff.

Provide a Specialist Clinical Pharmacy Service, including enquiry answering service for Digital Medicine related queries from other members of the Pharmacy team, wards and clinics.

Provide specialist advice on the use of Digital Medicines systems to end user and inform clinicians, service providers and governance structures of current and future capabilities of systems to enhance patient safety.

Define and develop test plans for Digital Medicines systems to ensure safety of upgrades and new functionality.

Maintain a patient focused approach to all aspects of system design and development.

Assist in the design, development, testing and implementation of systems within the Trust, to ensure the safe, economic and clinically effective use of medications in all patients in line with local and national initiatives.

Identify new opportunities for the development of Pharmacy Services and assist in the preparation of business cases to support these developments.

Create, update and maintain appropriate system documentation, and contributing to policies governing the use of systems and access control.

Ensure highly complex Digital Medicines systems and equipment are well maintained and used in accordance with relevant guidance and policies referring to IT services or system support services as appropriate.

Provide quality assurance for new developments within EPMA and other clinical systems.

Create functional requirement documents for proposed EPMA and other clinical systems development work.

Working with medical staff to formulate medicine policies and guidelines that promote rational & economical prescribing. Monitoring practice to ensure policies and guidelines are adhered to.

Working with relevant staff to reduce risks in medicine prescribing, storage & administration. Ensuring legal requirements are met. Reporting of clinical incidents and responding to drug errors by helping to review practice and decrease risks.

Demonstrating an awareness of and commitment to Trust values and the pharmacy vision for the future.

Attend and contribute to Divisional/Speciality meetings.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • GPhC Registered Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician
  • Clinical diploma or NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Services plus accredited underpinning knowledge or equivalent qualification approved by the GPhC
Desirable
  • RPS membership
  • Prince2 Project Management Qualification

Experience

Essential
  • Significant post-registration experience in a hospital setting
  • Clinical supervision and training of junior staff
Desirable
  • Experience of deputising for a more senior clinical pharmacist
  • Experience supporting Digital Medicines systems.

Practical and Intellectual Skills

Essential
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and able to communicate effectively with clinical staff, patients, and relatives.
  • Able to demonstrate high levels of accuracy in all areas of work
  • Able to demonstrate high levels of skill related to manual dexterity and accuracy during dispensing activities
  • Able to work with PC's
  • Good general pharmaceutical & clinical knowledge
  • Able to prioritise work and work under pressure
Desirable
  • Able to interpret and report financial trend information concerning medicines use.
  • Familiarity with Digital Medicines Systems including EPMA.
