Apprentice Field Service Engineer

Would you like to earn a salary whilst learning on the job and gaining a qualification? We have an exciting opportunity for a suitable candidate to join the Aftermarket team as an Apprentice to be trained up to a recognised Level 3 qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance Technician.

Role

As an apprentice Field Service Engineer, you will predominantly be trained to inspect, diagnose, repair and test equipment and systems on buses. This position will entail working within a service and repair centre environment, working with tools and machinery and will give you a great opportunity to build a career in a highly specialised field. You will be required to demonstrate a level of flexibility, have a positive attitude, with an ability to work well as part of a team.

During the course of your apprenticeship, you will work towards completing these key tasks to a high standard with the aim of doing these with little to no support at the end of your learning period.

  • Carry out routine safety inspections
  • Carry out routine mechanical and electrical servicing, planned preventative maintenance and health checks
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical systems, engine, fuel, coolant and transmission systems
  • Identify with accumulated knowledge and apply initiative to rectify intermittent faults.
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair electrical systems, electrical circuits, electrical units and components including high voltage electric drive systems.
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair on board auxiliary systems, battery charging and electronic drive systems.
  • Use diagnostic equipment and software to locate, diagnose and rectify faults on mechanical and electrical components.
  • Use diagnostic equipment to interrogate electronic control units and programmable control systems

This list is not exhaustive, the role may require other reasonable duties from time to time in line with needs of the business.

Training

The delivery of this course takes place over 3 years and is conducted through 1-week block release every other month from start to finish. A course plan is issued on enrolment covering the whole apprenticeship duration so that dates are issued well ahead to ensure best planning for the employer and apprentice allowing maximum attendance on all dates given.

The apprentice will gain valuable workplace experience through the completion of this qualification and will achieve the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician through City and Guilds allowing for eligibility to apply to the relevant body as a qualified Engineering Technician. For further development there is opportunity in the future to then progress to a Master Technician once skills from the Level 3 have been thoroughly put into practice.

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you have the opportunity to become a qualified field service engineer within the automotive industry.
