We are looking for a new education team member to primarily support our large number of pre-registration students across both our hospital sites. You will be an enthusiastic therapeutic radiographer who is a forward thinking, creative individual and keen to be instrumental in continuing to develop and support innovative radiotherapy education at the Trust. You will be working with education providers, students, friendly teams of radiographers, clinicians and physicists all dedicated to improving radiotherapy planning and treatment techniques. There is the additional opportunity to participate in the delivery of formal teaching for our education providers.

You will be supporting the lecturer practitioners in providing tutorial support, schedule planning, placement development, administration, assessor support, and the pastoral care of students within the departments. In addition, you will maintain your practice as a radiographer working with highly sophisticated image guided and patient centred radiotherapy techniques at one of Europe's leading cancer centres.

Main duties of the job

1.1. The post-holder will be primarily responsible for assisting in the coordination and provision of the clinical education component for pre-registration radiotherapy students on placement at the Royal Marsden.

1.2. This role also requires the post holder to host visitors to the radiotherapy department and to provide them with appropriate information and supervision according to their needs. As well as supporting the wider MDT in radiotherapy orientation as directed by the education team.

1.3. To maintain clinical skills the post holder will also work as a Senior II clinical practitioner and will be responsible for carrying out radiotherapy processes as prescribed, carefully and accurately and assisting in the operational management of a specialist highly complex radiotherapy work base, which may be a treatment unit, a brachytherapy unit, a CT scanner, or a treatment preparation area, and supervising the immediate radiographic team in the absence of a senior I radiographer.

1.4. The post- holder will liaise with medical, physics, nursing, clerical and support within the department and throughout the institution. This role requires the post holder to coordinate clinical supervision with the lecturer practitioner and the professional development lead. The key working relationships will be with the clinical radiographers and the superintendent radiographers.

  • Support the learning environment at the clinical work base within the team so that all members are able to develop skills and expertise.
  • Participate in the clinical education and assessment, both formal and informal of a diverse mix of student radiographers at the work base, and assist in their day to day supervision
  • Assist with the continuous training of radiographers at the work base.
  • Assist with the local induction of new staff members at the work base
  • Assist with clinical placement support for all pre-registration students, to include assisting with managing placement allocation, admin related to clinical placement and supporting department with provision of clinical placements.
  • Ensure that all students on placement receive induction and specialist information related to specific rotation in a timely manner.
  • Be involved with recruitment and selection activity for undergraduates with the HEIs.
  • Participate in programme development and review activities.
  • Assist with and deliver tutorials to pre- registration students.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential
  • HCPC registration as a therapeutic radiographer (requires BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy or equivalent accredited programme)
  • Be willing to undertake a Post graduate qualification/ training in assessing/supervising/teaching if not already

Experience & Skills

Essential
  • Be an effective communicator across the multi-disciplinary team and university partners using both written and spoken English; including being able to manage sensitive information and to deal with anxious and demanding individuals using diplomacy and persuasion.
  • Post registration experience of sophisticated RT equipment treating advanced techniques in a complex department, competent in all imaging technologies
  • Previous experience of participating in clinical education of pre-registration students
  • Able to produce simple reports on educational activity
  • Ability to teach and facilitate in a variety of settings with different levels of staff
  • Demonstrate understanding of the advanced principles for sophisticated radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery
  • Computer literacy
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
Desirable
  • Experience of co-ordination of the student experience
  • Display strong organisational, administrative and time management skills, and ability to prioritise tasks
  • Have participated in research/audit/service evaluation
