Data Engineer

Data Engineer

Location: Hampshire, ideally 2–3 days onsite per week

Salary: Up to £45,000

Contract: Permanent, full-time

We’re working with a professional sports organisation looking for a Data Engineer to take ownership of its established cloud data platform.

This is an opportunity to work closely with data and performance specialists, ensuring they have reliable, accessible information to support their decisions. You’ll maintain and improve the existing platform, strengthen its pipelines and help develop new capabilities across analytics and automation.

The role

You’ll take responsibility for the day-to-day reliability and ongoing development of an Azure and Databricks environment. Working with technical and non-technical colleagues, you’ll translate their requirements into practical data solutions and support the systems they rely on.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building and maintaining scalable Python pipelines to bring together data from multiple sources.
  • Developing SQL transformations and data models that support analysis and reporting.
  • Improving data quality through validation, monitoring and clear governance practices.
  • Managing database performance, indexing, backups and user permissions.
  • Developing AI-based monitoring tools to help identify pipeline issues and improve operational reliability.
  • Using Azure DevOps to manage source control and collaborative development.
  • Investigating issues, documenting processes and providing ongoing platform support.
  • Working closely with data scientists and performance teams to understand and deliver their requirements.

What we’re looking for

You’ll bring practical data engineering experience and the confidence to take responsibility for an existing platform. You should enjoy solving problems, improving reliability and working with people who use data in different ways.

You’ll need:

  • Experience building and maintaining data pipelines using Python.
  • Strong SQL skills and a sound understanding of data modelling.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms, particularly Azure and Databricks.
  • An understanding of data quality, governance and privacy principles.
  • The ability to explain technical issues clearly and collaborate across teams.

Experience working with sports or performance datasets would be useful, but isn’t essential. Strong data engineering skills and a careful approach to data quality are the priorities.

Benefits

The package includes annual leave plus bank holidays, a contributory pension, health and wellbeing support, learning and development opportunities, free onsite parking and a cycle-to-work scheme. Further details will be shared during the recruitment process.
