Mechanical Design Projects Engineer-

Robotics & Automation

£35-65k + Paid Overtime + Pension

Ref: 25771

Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys turning ideas into practical engineering solutions? Do you want to work on bespoke robotic automation projects where you can take ownership of designs from initial concept through to manufacture and installation?

We’re working with a specialist engineering business delivering bespoke automation and robotic systems for industrial applications. Due to the demands of its growing project portfolio, the business is looking to strengthen its mechanical design team with an engineer who brings a practical mindset, strong problem-solving skills and a genuine desire to develop and deliver good engineering solutions.

This is an opportunity to work on varied, technically interesting projects, including robotic end-of-arm tooling and automated machinery, with the scope to develop your technical expertise and take on increasing responsibility.

The Role:

Working closely with the Engineering Projects Manager and wider project team, you’ll take responsibility for the mechanical design of bespoke automation equipment, ensuring designs are practical, fit for purpose and delivered to agreed project requirements.

  • Producing 3D models, detailed 2D engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using SolidWorks.
  • Designing bespoke mechanical components, assemblies, robotic end-of-arm tooling and automation equipment.
  • Developing designs from initial concept and feasibility through to detailed design, manufacture and commissioning.
  • Working with electrical, software and project engineers to ensure mechanical designs integrate effectively into complete automation systems.
  • Carrying out mechanical calculations, tolerance assessments and design reviews to ensure designs meet performance and safety requirements.
  • Considering design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA), reliability, cost and ease of maintenance throughout the design process.
  • Liaising with suppliers, procurement and manufacturing teams to select components, resolve technical issues and support fabrication.
  • Supporting prototyping, testing, installation and commissioning activities where required.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate engineering drawings, technical documentation and project records.
  • Helping maintain consistent design standards, sharing knowledge and supporting the development of other members of the mechanical design team.

The Person:

We’re interested in engineers who combine technical ability with the right attitude and approach to problem-solving. You may be an early-career Mechanical Design Engineer looking to take the next step, or an established engineer ready to take on greater responsibility. What matters most is your ability to think logically, work methodically and see a task through to completion.

  • Experience in mechanical design, ideally within robotics, automation or special-purpose machinery
  • Practical experience of SolidWorks and 3D mechanical design
  • Able to produce detailed engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation
  • Understanding of mechanical calculations, tolerances and design validation
  • Knowledge of design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Able to collaborate effectively with electrical, software, manufacturing and project teams
  • flexible for occassional site visits to support sales and/or commissiooing

What's on Offer?

  • Opportunity to work on bespoke robotic automation projects
  • Involvement throughout the mechanical design and project delivery process
  • Collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Opportunities to develop technical expertise and design skills
  • Scope to support and mentor other designers
