About the Role

We are seeking a highly capable Java Engineer to join a newly established Centre of Excellence (CoE) focused on delivering secure, scalable, and production-grade digital solutions for the financial services sector.

This is a hands-on engineering role ideal for someone with strong experience in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and API development, who thrives in collaborative, high-accountability environments. The successful candidate will contribute to backend service design, secure API delivery, and the development of reusable engineering assets across client engagements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot
  • Build and integrate secure APIs aligned with industry standards (e.g., OAuth2, OpenID Connect)
  • Contribute to the development of microservices architectures and distributed systems
  • Collaborate with frontend, DevOps, and QA teams to deliver cohesive, end-to-end solutions
  • Participate in technical design sessions, code reviews, and architecture discussions
  • Support the definition and evolution of CoE engineering standards and reusable components
  • Ensure adherence to Agile delivery practices, CI/CD pipelines, and DevSecOps principles
Required Skills and Experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and enterprise-grade backend development
  • Proven experience designing and implementing secure APIs and service integrations
  • Solid understanding of microservices architecture, service orchestration, and distributed systems
  • Experience working in regulated environments such as banking, fintech, or insurance
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerisation (e.g., Docker), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure)
  • Prior experience working in or contributing to a Centre of Excellence team
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
Desirable Attributes
  • Exposure to event-driven architectures and messaging systems (e.g., Kafka)
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible)
  • Familiarity with observability tools and performance tuning
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to backend design leadership
  • Prior consulting experience or experience in client-facing roles
Engagement Model
  • Outside IR35
  • 12-month initial contract with potential for extension or permanent employment
  • Hybrid working model: minimum 2 days onsite in London, with flexibility to travel to other UK client sites as required
  • Part of a long-term strategic capability within a joint consulting and technology delivery partnership
  • This is a strategic, reusable engineering role
