We are looking for an experienced Application Packager to join the Software Discovery and Packaging Team, working fully onsite within a secure, business-critical defence environment. The successful candidate will be customer-focused, technically strong and comfortable working within formal security, change and release controls.
The team is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of applications, from discovery and intake through packaging,
testing, deployment, updating and retirement, and supports the Operating System gold build process. The environment combines current Windows 10/11 and MECM-based delivery with a number of long-lived and specialist applications, so candidates must be comfortable working across both modern and legacy packaging technologies.
You will work closely with application owners, desktop engineering, infrastructure, security and service management teams, and deal directly with customer stakeholders. You must be able to take ownership of packaging requests, manage priorities and explain risks, options and progress clearly.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITIES
Proven enterprise application packaging experience, ideally gained within a desktop transformation or large managed-service environment.
Strong packaging experience for Windows 10 and Windows 11, including complex applications with dependencies, drivers, licensing or custom configuration.
Expert knowledge of Windows Installer (MSI) technology, including transforms, custom actions, repair behaviour and verbose logging.
Hands-on experience with Flexera AdminStudio / InstallShield and ORCA (or equivalent packaging toolsets).
Strong MECM Current Branch application deployment experience, including the application model, collections, distribution points, detection methods and deployment troubleshooting.
PowerShell scripting for packaging and deployment, ideally including the PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit (PSADT).
A structured troubleshooting approach using tools such as Process Monitor, installer logs and capture/snapshot tools.
Working knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy as they relate to application targeting and deployment.
Practical experience of working within Change and Release Management in a controlled environment.
Ability to produce clear package documentation, working instructions and reporting.
Strong communication and customer-service skills, with the confidence to engage application owners and stakeholders directly.
Well organised and self-motivated, able to prioritise competing requests and work methodically through issues.
DV security clearance is required for this role.
DESIRABLE SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Experience packaging for older Windows versions (e.g. Windows 7), App-V sequencing, and maintaining legacy BAT or VBScript installers, as some specialist applications remain in service.
PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit (PSADT).
MSIX packaging, Intune Win32 app deployment or co-management.
VMware App Volumes, Citrix or VDI application delivery.
Experience in defence, government or other air-gapped / disconnected environments, including secure media handling.
MECM OS deployment, task sequences and gold build processes.
C# or other languages used for custom actions or tooling.
ServiceNow, ITIL Foundation, and an understanding of agile and waterfall project delivery.
Understanding of networking fundamentals, cloud technologies and relevant vendor certifications (e.g. Flexera, Microsoft).
