SQL DBA/SQL Database Administrator

In this role, you will be responsible for the management, optimisation, and maintenance of their SQL database platforms with a strong emphasis on Microsoft Azure SQL environments. You will ensure databases are secure, performant, and reliable while also supporting development teams with query performance, stored procedure tuning, and best practice data management.
They are a growing company with a great existing software development and infrastructure team, they're looking for their first dedicated DBA to take ownership of their growing SQL estate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Database management and administration, oversee the setup, configuration, and administration of Azure SQL databases and related services.
- Performance monitoring and optimisation, continuously monitor database performance and conduct tuning activities to ensure optimal efficiency at both server and query levels.
- Troubleshooting and issue resolution, identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, index issues, locking contentions, and failures across the SQL environment.
- Security and compliance, maintain database access controls, backups, encryption, and disaster recovery procedures in line with organisational policies.
- System maintenance, plan and execute routine maintenance activities including patching, updating, and data migrations.
- Collaboration with development teams, work closely with developers to review stored procedures, queries, and schema changes to ensure performance and scalability.
- Documentation and reporting, maintain accurate records of configurations, performance baselines, changes, and incident resolutions.
- ETL processes and data handling, support the design, execution, and maintenance of ETL workflows to ensure accurate, consistent, and timely movement of data across systems and environments.
Experience: 5 years of experience in SQL database administration or a similar role.
Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL administration.
- Demonstrated experience with performance monitoring tools and query tuning techniques.
- Ability to interpret execution plans and diagnose inefficient queries, indexes, and schema structures.
- Familiarity with backup strategies, high availability options, and disaster recovery planning.
- Understanding of networking, access control, and security principles in cloud environments.
- Experience working with ETL pipelines or data warehousing is an advantage.
