Firmware Developer

We are seeking a Firmware Developer for a leading marine energy company based on Merseyside but operating globally to its maritime clients.

The company provides battery and hybrid energy solutions that are used across the maritime industry.  They offer products worldwide supported by remote and on-site monitoring to ensure a first-class customer service.

Firmware Developer - The Role

This is a full-time permanent position working for an outstanding Company who will provide full training

The successful candidate will be building and maintaining embedded software for industrial systems and connected hardware products

The role involves low-level software development, real-time systems, microcontroller peripherals, communication protocols, hardware debugging, and close collaboration with electronics and systems engineers

You will work across the full firmware lifecycle: requirements analysis, architecture, implementation, hardware bring-up, debugging, optimization, testing, and production support

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware in C
• Develop software for ARM Cortex-M0 and Cortex-M4 microcontrollers
• Build and maintain applications running on FreeRTOS.  Design reliable multithreaded and event-driven firmware
• Implement and debug communication interfaces, including UART, SPI, I2C, and Ethernet
• Work with MCU peripherals such as ADCs, DACs, timers, interrupts, watchdogs, and DMA
• Integrate and maintain TCP/IP networking using the lwIP stack
• Perform hardware bring-up and debug interactions between firmware and electronics.  Analyze and resolve timing, memory, performance, and stability issues
• Optimize firmware for execution speed, memory consumption, and power consumption.  Develop diagnostics, logging, firmware update, and fault-handling mechanisms
• Read electrical schematics and collaborate with hardware engineers
• Use oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and other laboratory equipment during development and troubleshooting
• Participate in code reviews and maintain firmware development standards
• Use Git for branching, merging, release management, and collaborative development
• Support system integration, validation, manufacturing, and field troubleshooting
• Create and maintain technical documentation

Firmware Developer - The Candidate
Preferred experience

• Strong proficiency in C
• Commercial experience developing embedded firmware
• Experience with ARM Cortex-M0 and/or Cortex-M4 microcontrollers
• Experience with FreeRTOS or a comparable real-time operating system
• Solid understanding of multithreaded and concurrent programming
• Experience with UART, SPI, I2C, and Ethernet
• Experience working with ADCs, DACs, timers, DMA, interrupts, and other MCU peripherals
• Understanding of TCP/IP networking
• Experience using the lwIP library or a comparable embedded TCP/IP stack
• Ability to debug firmware using hardware debugging tools
• Ability to optimize firmware for execution speed, memory usage, and power consumption
• Practical understanding of electronic components, including resistors, capacitors, MOSFETs, operational amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, and digital logic ICs
• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics
• Experience using oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal generators
• Professional experience with Git

Firmware Developer - Benefits

A starting salary of £55,000pa

The salary is then increased as you progress through training to £57,500pa after 6 months and £60,000pa after 1 year

22 days holiday (plus 8 bank holidays)
