Engineering Manager - SCADA and Control Systems
Engineering Manager – SCADA & Integrated Control Systems
Major UK Infrastructure Programme | Permanent
Location: West Midlands / London (Hybrid)
An opportunity to lead the engineering delivery of some of the UK's most complex infrastructure control systems.
We are recruiting an experienced Engineering Manager to take a leading role in the delivery of critical control and monitoring systems on one of the UK's largest infrastructure programmes.
This is an opportunity to provide technical leadership across sophisticated, interconnected systems, including centralised SCADA, tunnel ventilation, mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems and wider operational control infrastructure.
Previous railway experience is not essential. We are equally interested in engineering leaders from other highly regulated, systems-intensive environments.
The opportunity
You will provide engineering leadership across major infrastructure systems, potentially focusing on:
- Engineering Management System (EMS): A centralised, system-of-systems SCADA environment integrating multiple infrastructure subsystems and providing operational visibility and control.
- Tunnel Ventilation Systems (TVS): Integrated control systems supporting tunnel ventilation, smoke extraction and associated safety-critical M&E infrastructure.
The precise project allocation will depend on your technical experience and strengths.
Key responsibilities
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams delivering complex SCADA and integrated control systems.
- Oversee the full systems engineering lifecycle, from requirements and design through integration, testing, commissioning and handover.
- Manage complex interfaces between multiple systems, suppliers, contractors and stakeholders.
- Ensure robust requirements management, configuration control, technical governance and engineering assurance.
- Provide leadership on systems integration, technical risk, safety assurance and cyber security considerations.
- Apply systems engineering principles, including the V-model, verification and validation.
- Work closely with project management, clients, end users and specialist engineering teams to resolve technical challenges.
- Ensure engineering solutions meet contractual, regulatory, operational and safety requirements.
What we're looking for
We're particularly interested in experienced Engineering Managers, Systems Engineering Managers or Technical Engineering Leaders who can demonstrate:
- Strong systems engineering and systems integration experience, ideally gained on major infrastructure or complex technology programmes.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering delivery and coordinating specialist technical teams.
- A sound understanding of SCADA, control systems, operational technology or similarly complex integrated systems.
- Proven capability in interface management, requirements management, configuration management and engineering change control.
- Familiarity with cyber security requirements in industrial control systems, ideally including IEC 62443 or comparable standards.
- Experience of engineering assurance, system safety, technical risk management and regulated engineering environments.
- Excellent client-facing communication skills, with the confidence to challenge technical requirements and influence engineering decisions.
Knowledge of CSM, CDM, RAMS and safety-by-design principles would be advantageous.
You do not need to be a hands-on SCADA programmer or PLC specialist. Dedicated technical experts will support these disciplines. The priority is someone who understands how complex systems fit together and can lead their successful engineering delivery.
Relevant industry backgrounds
Although rail experience would be beneficial, we welcome candidates from other sectors involving complex systems integration, including:
- Rail infrastructure and transport systems
- Industrial automation and process control
- Water and utilities
- Major infrastructure and integrated control systems
- Aerospace, defence and other safety-critical engineering environments
The emphasis is on your ability to lead complex engineering programmes, integrate multiple technologies and manage technical interfaces, rather than expertise in one particular product or industry.
Location and flexibility
This is a hybrid opportunity, typically involving 2–3 days per week across project and office locations.
The West Midlands is the principal location, with London also a potential base depending on the candidate.
Travel between locations will be required according to project needs, with flexibility to work remotely when appropriate.
The package
A competitive remuneration and benefits package is available, including:
- Annual performance-related bonus
- Company car benefit entitlement
- Competitive pension and life assurance
- Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
- Healthcare and wellbeing benefits
- Enhanced family leave and holiday provisions
- Professional development and long-term career progression
Interested?
If you're an experienced engineering leader who enjoys bringing complex systems together, managing multidisciplinary teams and delivering technically challenging infrastructure projects, I'd welcome a confidential conversation.
You don't need to have worked in rail. What matters is your ability to lead the engineering delivery of complex, integrated systems.
Apply directly or contact me to discuss the opportunity in confidence.
