OUTSIDE IR35

We are looking for a Data Scientist with strong machine learning and AI engineering skills to develop the capabilities of our in-house AI platform. This hands-on product development role takes ideas from business requirements through experimentation, evaluation and deployment. A particular focus is producing reliable, structured outputs that applications and business systems can consume and customers can use.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and improve machine learning and AI capabilities that address practical customer needs.
  • Build AI workflows for information extraction, classification, knowledge retrieval, summarisation and decision support.
  • Design, generate and validate structured JSON outputs using defined schemas, data types and validation rules.
  • Prepare, clean, transform and structure data for model development, application consumption, reporting and dissemination.
  • Evaluate appropriate approaches, including conventional machine learning, large language models, retrieval-augmented generation and fine-tuning where justified.
  • Create evaluation datasets and repeatable tests to measure accuracy, consistency, robustness, latency and cost.
  • Implement controls for missing information, unsupported answers, malformed outputs and cases requiring human review.
  • Work with developers to expose AI capabilities through APIs and integrate them into customer applications.
  • Support deployment, monitoring, version control and improvement of models and AI workflows.
  • Document datasets, experiments, design decisions and limitations while protecting confidential customer information.

Essential experience and skills

  • Demonstrable experience developing and deploying machine learning or AI solutions.
  • Strong Python skills and experience with relevant data science and machine learning libraries.
  • Practical experience with large language models, AI APIs and systematic evaluation.
  • Strong understanding of JSON, JSON Schema, structured data and data validation.
  • Experience preparing datasets, using SQL and building reproducible data processing workflows.
  • Sound understanding of statistical evaluation, overfitting, data leakage and model limitations.
  • Ability to write maintainable, tested code and collaborate through version control.
  • Clear communication and the ability to translate business problems into measurable technical outcomes.

Desirable experience

  • Retrieval systems, embeddings, vector databases and document processing.
  • MLOps, cloud deployment, containers and model monitoring.
  • AI tool calling, agent workflows and Model Context Protocol integrations.
  • Experience developing AI capabilities for a commercial software product.
