The purpose of Infrastructure services is to ensure our services and systems are hosted effectively, securely and efficiently.
The function of Infrastructure services brings all network and hosting infrastructure into a single team which will provide a multi-skilled 24/7 Infra Operations team organised by function and focussed on supporting continual improvement.
The teams are divided into four core areas providing technical and service management expertise:
- Hosting
- Cloud centre of excellence
- Connectivity
- Central capabilities
RRP (Recruitment and Retention Premia)
The post of Technical Consultant has been awarded a Recruitment and Retention Premia (RRP) in response to current labour market conditions. In recognition of this, the role attracts an additional monthly RRP payment equal to 13% per annum.
Main duties of the job
The Technical Consultant band 7 will work closely with the Technical Operations Manager (Vulnerability and Risk Management) to reduce the overall risk and threat landscape of the NHS England Infrastructure Services estate.
This will include but not be limited to:
- Undertaking patching of both on prem and Cloud based infrastructure
- Assist with the production EMT reports in relation to patching and risk
- Develop techniques, processes and tooling to increase the speed and efficacy of patching
- Work with the IT Ops team to address data quality shortfalls
- Work across Directorates to develop reporting capabilities from Vulnerability Management tooling.
The Vulnerability and Patch Management team is a sub-team, embedded within the Infrastructure Services pillar, working closely with the IT Operations team. The team is positioned in the front and centre of a cyber exposure programme, which generates many opportunities to develop skills and experiences to support this programme of work.
Responsibilities will include:
- Maintenance of tooling used to deliver the capabilities of the role.
- Utilisation of the processes and procedures in place to deliver the patching and vulnerability management function.

Security Clearance
To meet National Security Vetting requirements, SC clearances require 5 years continuous UK residency. In certain cases, this can be reduced to three years continuous UK residency, with additional overseas checks for the previous two years.
Candidates who were posted abroad for service with HM Government, Armed Forces or within a UK government role - will still be considered.

Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
- Extensive experience implementing and managing infrastructure across large scale hybrid enterprises utilising varied Operating Systems and Cloud Hosting Providers
- Significant experience of following Release, Change, Configuration and Project management processes
- Experience using Scripting (such as GraphQL) to deliver quality assurance and automation and reporting
Skills
- Experience of successfully implementing a flexible and pragmatic approach to problem solving
- Experience of delivering projects in an IT environment
- Proven track record for ownership and completion of tasks and self-management of parallel activities
- Demonstrable experience in at least two of the following LINUX/UNIX OS installation, administration and maintenance, ideally in Ubuntu Server RHEL/CentOS LINUX/UNIX shell scripting MS Windows Server administration and maintenance, including batch file scripting VMware vCenter and ESXI administration
Qualifications
- Any/all of the following: Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) MS AZ-104 or AZ-303 AWS SysOps Administrator
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience

- Proven ability to plan, organise and prioritise own workload and effectively manage conflicting demands and expectations
