Software Engineering Team Lead - C++

Software Engineering Team Lead (C++)

Location: London - 3 days per week in the office
Salary: Up to £110,000 base + bonus + pension

The Opportunity

I'm working with a leading global technology and financial markets organisation looking to appoint a Software Engineering Team Lead to join its London-based engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced C++ developer looking to take the next step in their career, combining hands-on software development with technical leadership and responsibility for a team of engineers.

You'll play an important role in the design, development and delivery of business-critical software applications, providing technical direction, supporting other developers and helping drive engineering standards and best practices.

This is a genuine player-coach position, so you'll remain technically hands-on while taking ownership of technical decisions, engineering delivery and the ongoing development of the team.

The Role

  • Lead and support a team of software engineers, providing technical guidance, mentoring and direction.

  • Remain hands-on with C++ development, contributing to the design, development and maintenance of software applications.

  • Take ownership of technical decisions, code reviews and engineering standards.

  • Oversee software delivery across the full development lifecycle.

  • Drive improvements in software quality, performance, scalability and maintainability.

  • Work closely with other technical teams and business stakeholders to deliver effective solutions.

  • Encourage the adoption of modern development practices, including AI-assisted engineering tools.

  • Help modernise existing applications and improve development processes.

  • Identify technical challenges and drive solutions across the engineering team.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong commercial experience with C++ development, ideally modern C++ (C+ or later).

  • Experience developing and maintaining complex software applications and systems.

  • Good understanding of software engineering principles, code quality and application performance.

  • Knowledge of multithreading, concurrency and memory management.

  • Previous experience in a technical leadership capacity, such as Team Lead, Technical Lead, Lead Developer or Senior/Principal Engineer.

  • The ability to remain hands-on technically while providing guidance and direction to other developers.

  • Strong communication, problem-solving and collaboration skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within financial services, banking, trading or financial markets.

  • Exposure to high-performance or low-latency systems.

  • Experience with cloud technologies, AWS, Docker or Kubernetes.

  • Familiarity with Linux development environments.

  • Experience with networking, messaging or distributed systems.

  • Exposure to AI-assisted software development tools.

The Package

  • Salary up to £110,000 base.

  • Annual bonus.

  • Company pension.

  • Hybrid working - 3 days per week in the London office.

Alternative relevant backgrounds: C++ Technical Lead, Lead C++ Developer, Lead Software Engineer, Senior C++ Developer, Principal C++ Engineer or Software Engineering Manager with a strong hands-on C++ background.

If you're an experienced C++ developer who enjoys remaining hands-on while taking ownership of technical direction and supporting other engineers, this could be an excellent next step.
