Role overview

Take technical responsibility for substantial antenna engineering work packages, covering design, electromagnetic modelling, development, testing and ongoing product support. The position also contributes to radar system analysis and selected RF design and simulation activities within a radar engineering business.

Key responsibilities

·  Lead antenna research and development activities, taking designs through development and supporting their continued use in production.

·  Maintain design information, test methods and technical records, incorporating product improvements and addressing component obsolescence.

·  Oversee the development of requirements and specifications, including the associated verification and validation requirements.

·  Provide specialist guidance to research, systems and hardware engineers, working with supply chain and quality teams, suppliers and customers.

·  Support antenna and RF designs, production test facilities and the methods used to verify performance.

·  Investigate manufacturing and technical problems through trend analysis and root cause investigation, helping resolve issues that affect manufacturability.

·  Apply engineering procedures consistently and maintain quality throughout design and manufacture.

·  Prepare estimates and plans, manage antenna work packages and keep supporting documentation complete and up to date.

·  Undertake other activities relevant to the role.

Essential skills and experience

·  Practical experience designing and developing printed and waveguide antennas at microwave frequencies, including tolerance analysis.

·  A sound understanding of antenna theory, design and testing, covering antenna arrays, slotted arrays and printed antennas.

·  Experience designing or selecting RF components such as rotary joints, filters, splitters and combiners.

·  Ability to design antenna systems using software modelling packages.

·  Familiarity with RF measurement equipment, including spectrum analysers and vector network analysers.

·  Understanding of design for manufacture and design for test.

·  Experience in a production environment, with a good understanding of processes and facilities such as near-field scanning, compact ranges and anechoic chambers.

·  A self-motivated approach, effective teamwork and strong written and spoken English.

Desirable knowledge and experience

·  Familiarity with antenna design software, particularly Altair RF and antenna design tools.

·  Knowledge of radar or closely related applications, including radar system modelling.

·  Understanding of high-power RF amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers, limiters, circulators, filters, mixers and phase-locked loops, particularly modelling these components to support RF simulation.

·  Experience with requirements management or systems engineering disciplines.

·  Use of MATLAB, Python or AI tools.

·  Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility and regulatory requirements, such as FCC, ITU or ETSI requirements.
