The role
Our client is on a data transformation journey, moving from on-premise SQL Server and Oracle core systems to a modern cloud data platform (Snowflake).
We need a Senior Data Solutions Engineer who can work across both worlds. You’ll look after the current estate, keeping it stable, optimised and ready to migrate. You’ll then lead the move across, designing modern data engineering solutions and pipelines for the future. Throughout, you’ll keep critical business services running and be the go-to technical specialist across Data & Tech, operational teams and suppliers.
What you’ll do
Support and optimise the current estate
• Support, maintain and tune our on-prem SQL Server and Oracle databases, using strong DBA-style skills
• Write and optimise advanced SQL: queries, views, stored procedures and functions
• Find the root cause of complex database, system and data problems, and fix them for good
• Tune queries, integrations and workloads for performance and cost
• Contribute to resilience, disaster recovery and business continuity
• Document how legacy systems work and what depends on what, ready for migration
Migrate from old to new
• Review existing databases, interfaces and data flows, and simplify, consolidate or modernise them
• Plan, build, test and reconcile the migration of workloads to Snowflake using ETL/ELT
• Support business users through system and process changes while keeping services running
Design and build modern data engineering
• Design and build scalable data pipelines and integrations across on-prem, cloud and business systems
• Build reusable ELT processes to transform, clean and validate data
• Add data quality checks, reconciliation controls and exception handling
• Create trusted datasets for reporting, analytics and business insight
• Help shape modern data engineering standards, architecture and the technology roadmap
What you’ll bring
• Strong SQL Server experience, including advanced SQL development, performance tuning and troubleshooting. Oracle experience is a plus
• Experience supporting and optimising live production databases and operational processes
• Experience designing and building ETL/ELT, data integration and pipeline solutions
• Strong problem-solving skills, with experience resolving complex technical issues
• Confidence working with business stakeholders and explaining technical points to non-technical people
• Clear technical documentation and support guidance
• Experience of Snowflake, Fabric or Databricks
• Azure DevOps and Azure Cloud
Core skills and behaviours
• Data engineering: ETL/ELT development, data integration and migration
• Solution design: performance optimisation, automation and process improvement
• Problem solving: technical diagnosis and root-cause analysis
• Communication: working with stakeholders, explaining things clearly and writing technical documentation
• Teamwork: collaborating, sharing knowledge and always looking to improve
Why join?
You’ll get the best of both worlds: deep, hands-on work with established database platforms, and the chance to shape a modern cloud data platform from the ground up. You’ll play a key part in a business-critical transformation.
