Solutions Architect

Solutions Architect

About Scrumconnect

Scrumconnect Consulting is a UK-based digital transformation consultancy delivering secure, scalable, and user-centred solutions across government and enterprise organisations. We specialise in agile delivery, cloud platforms, data, and modern engineering practices, helping clients build reliable services that meet high operational and compliance standards.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Solution Architect to help a major UK government client shape and deliver change that adds value for citizens and the public sector, taking applications and services from early concept through to detailed design and delivery.

You will work in a large, complex estate where long-standing core systems sit alongside modern cloud services, so much of the work involves integrating the two and modernising safely. Some of the time, you will be getting under the skin of new requests at pace, working out what they touch and whether they are feasible. At other times, you will work closely with delivery squads to see designs through in detail. This role suits someone who moves quickly, asks sharp questions early and is just as comfortable rolling up their sleeves with a team as framing the big picture.

Key responsibilities

  • Get to grips with new change requests quickly, asking the right questions of business, product and technical stakeholders to understand impacts across systems, data and integrations.

  • Run rapid feasibility assessments, setting out options, risks, dependencies and rough effort estimates so decisions can be made quickly.

  • Architect applications and subsystems from high-level concepts through detailed design to delivery, working with engineering squads through backlog shaping, design reviews and sprint planning.

  • Design pragmatic integration and migration approaches between Legacy core systems and modern cloud services, protecting the stability of live services.

  • Produce proportionate designs and solution briefs, recording decisions so squads can build with confidence.

  • Act as a key technical contact for a product area alongside the lead engineer, helping prioritise which designs are needed and when.

  • Take designs through architecture governance and design authority, aligned with the client's reference architectures, design guidance and technology standards.

  • Support technical roadmaps and discovery work, harvest reusable patterns from squads and mentor more junior colleagues.

Required skills and experience

  • Proven experience architecting applications and subsystems from initial concept through to live delivery (discovery, Alpha, beta and live), staying with solutions through build rather than handing over a design and walking away.

  • Ability to demonstrate examples of solutions you have architected end to end, the key decisions you made and what you would do differently.

  • Ability to assess change quickly and form a clear view on feasibility and impact, working at pace with incomplete information.

  • Strong experience in Legacy estates: integrating established core systems and data stores with cloud-native services, and planning incremental modernisation without disrupting live services.

  • Broad hands-on AWS experience and knowledge of modern integration patterns such as APIs, event-driven and messaging approaches.

  • Confidence in making and recording decisions using ADRs and trade-off analysis, working within reference architectures, standards and reusable patterns.

  • Understanding of information security, data protection and threat modelling fundamentals.

  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Experience delivering digital services in UK central government or regulated environments, within agile squads and governed design assurance processes.

  • A degree in computer science, engineering or a related technical subject, or equivalent professional experience.

Desirable

  • TOGAF or AWS architecture certifications.

  • Familiarity with a modern open-source stack, ideally Java/Spring Boot, Next.js and Ruby, running on AWS.

  • Experience designing services delivered through automated CI/CD pipelines, with behaviour-driven development and automated testing built in.

  • Experience choosing technology within an approved enterprise catalogue or set of open standards, and making the case when something new is needed.

  • Familiarity with the Technology Code of Practice and GOV.UK Service Standard.
