Clinical Fellow in Cardiology - ST3 Equivalent

Job summary

Applicants are invited for a Clinical Fellow post (ST3+ level) in Cardiology. The post is initially for 24 months, with the possibility to extend thereafter.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with our Cardiology team, we offer specialist services in coronary angioplasty (including 24-hour PCI), electrophysiology (simple and complex ablations), cardiology devices (including CRT, S-ICDs and conduction system pacing) and cardiac imaging (complex echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT).

The post-holder will have the opportunity to gain experience in non-invasive investigations, core cardiology procedures including echocardiography, diagnostic coronary angiography, and cardiac pacing as well as core medical procedures. Duties will include the inpatient care of patients admitted with a variety of cardiac and medical conditions. The job involves a general medicine on call currently 1:11 rota. The post-holder will have a named Educational supervisor. Participation in local research, QIPS and audits will be supported.

The post is ideal for those who wish to consolidate their experience in general cardiology and internal medicine. Previous experience in cardiology is be desirable but not essential. MRCP or equivalent will be required as is full GMC registration with a license to practice.

Main duties of the job

The primary responsibility will be to support cardiology referrals, consultant-led ward rounds, supervising and teaching medical students, junior doctors, allied health professionals. The main duties include participating in a General Medical 1:11 on call at Alexandra Hospital in year one, a 1:12 on call at Worcester Royal Hospital in year two, monthly mortality and morbidity meetings, two outpatient clinics per week, and attendance to weekly multidisciplinary meetings.

This post is suitable for someone with a good grounding in general medicine and cardiology, wishing to consolidate their skills in both specialties.

Job responsibilities

This is a 2-year rotation suitable for doctors wishing to consolidate their skills in acute and general Medicine, Cardiology training and exposure to NHS practices.

This is a full time post subject to NHS and Trust terms and conditions of service and EWTD. The first year will be spent at the Alexandra Hospital Redditch. The job involves a general medicine on call currently 1:11 rota and provides ample training opportunities for PACES exam. This is a full shift rota with prospective cover, attracting an on call banding of 1B (40%). The post holder will have training in general Cardiology with 2 supervised Cardiology clinics a week, echocardiography, other non-invasive tests, ambulatory BP and ECGs, cardiac event monitors; permanent pacemaker implantation and cardiac catheterisation sessions. At the Alexandra Hospital there is a strong interest in heart failure and atrial fibrillation management.

The post holder will be encouraged to take part in audit and research as part of their training as well as teaching of undergraduates and junior colleagues; participation in management meetings. They will have access to the same training opportunities as other registrars and attend training days organised by the Specialty training committee. The budget to support training is currently set at £600 per year.

The second year will be at Worcestershire Royal Hospital with more focus on Cardiology training and procedures including percutaneous intervention, complex devices, transoesophageal echocardiography, myocardial perfusion scans, CT coronary angiography, cardiac MRI as determined by the post holders specific interests. There will be general medicine on call at Worcester which is currently 1:12.

CORE DUTIES

  • Cardiology in-patients CCU and consultant ward rounds, ward referrals.
  • 2 outpatient clinics per week.
  • Support and training in non-invasive investigations.
  • Support and training in cardiac catheterisation and/or pacing/complex device implantation
  • Support and training in advanced cardiac imaging (CT/MRI)
  • Attendance at weekly multidisciplinary meetings
