Main tasks/focus will be in all aspects of Mechanical Fitting as well as gaining extensive knowledge of engineering materials and standards.

Role

The Mechanical Fitter role involves:

·         Working from engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to undertake the manufacture, installation,  this will involve:

·         Testing, commissioning, fault diagnosis, maintenance, overhaul and removal of mechanical and fluid power equipment.

·         This can include propulsion machinery and auxiliary systems (such as water, air conditioning and power generation). It requires knowledge and expertise in the use of common and specialist machine and hand tools, and the use of a variety of measuring and diagnostic equipment and processes to ensure individual components and assemblies meet the required specification.

Training

All Apprentices will complete a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard programme. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.

Apprentices will also complete a knowledge qualification (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years.

After your initial training at SETA, you will remain with SMS to further develop your skills ultimately leading to your End Point Assessment.

To achieve full certification, SETA will make regular visits during the Apprentices time in the workplace to ensure they are developing all the required skills within the Standard, including the specified behaviours and checking your theory knowledge via professional discussions.

All training culminates in your EPA, these final tests are administered by an independent assessment organisation and take place in the last three months of the apprenticeship.
