Platform Engineering Manager
Platform Engineering Manager
We’re looking for an experienced Platform Engineering Manager to lead and develop an established platform engineering team and help shape the future direction of an internal cloud platform.
This is primarily a leadership role, suited to someone who understands what great platform engineering looks like and is passionate about creating an environment where engineers can perform at their best.
You’ll lead a team of experienced and mid-level engineers across software, infrastructure and cloud, helping them develop, creating a high-trust culture and giving the team clear direction and purpose.
Alongside the people leadership, you’ll have significant autonomy to shape the platform roadmap, improve operational maturity and determine how the platform should evolve as the organisation continues to grow.
The role is approximately 70% leadership / 30% technical, so you won’t be expected to spend your days writing Terraform or building cloud infrastructure. However, you’ll need enough platform and public-cloud knowledge to challenge experienced engineers, understand architectural decisions and set a strong technical direction.
What you'll be doing
Lead, coach and develop a distributed team of platform engineers
Create a safe, collaborative and high-ownership engineering culture
Set the strategic direction and roadmap for the internal platform
Champion a platform mindset focused on improving developer experience
Help engineering teams reduce friction through self-service and well-designed platform capabilities
Improve the operational maturity, reliability and scalability of the platform
Work closely with engineering, architecture, security and technology leadership
Provide technical direction and challenge while empowering engineers to own implementation
Help define what the platform needs to become as the organisation grows
What we're looking for
Previous experience managing a Platform, Cloud, DevOps or SRE engineering team
Strong people leadership, coaching and team-development experience
A genuine understanding of modern platform engineering and developer enablement
Experience working with public cloud environments such as Azure, AWS or GCP
Ability to set strategy and build a longer-term platform roadmap
Enough technical credibility to work effectively with experienced engineers
Strong stakeholder and communication skills
An energetic, collaborative leadership style that inspires teams and creates psychological safety
You do not need to be the most hands-on engineer in the team. The key is understanding what good platforms look like, developing great engineers and creating a platform that genuinely makes software delivery easier.
There is a high degree of autonomy in the position, with the opportunity to shape both the platform and your own progression as the function continues to mature.
