AO is at the convergence of cutting-edge technologies, e.g., hydrogen propulsion, IoT, marine robotics and AI. We make the transition to hydrogen propulsion for marine vessels seamless with a range of products and services that help businesses and organisations achieve their zero-emission goals. We are hiring a Software Engineer to work within our growing Engineering Team developing cutting edge technology to use in our first uncrewed surface vessel (USV).

A successful candidate must be a team player with a passion for sharing knowledge and be ready to be at the grassroots of this growing business supporting the growth of a robust and diverse team delivering results that will revolutionise the way we protect and monitor our oceans.

Who you are:

● You should have 2+ years work experience as a Software Engineer with proven ability to work independently.

● Able to work across teams of colleagues from diverse backgrounds, skills, knowledge, levels of experience and expertise. You build strong working relationships and communicate effectively with your colleagues across various functions

● Able to work autonomously (see what we did there!) with a proactive mindset

● You balance commercial design considerations with a drive for quality, evaluating the data to inform your decision making

● You are confident in your skills and know your area of expertise with an eye for innovation

What you’ll do

● Build highly scalable distributed solutions for remote-operated and autonomous Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs).

● Develop new features and maintain the end-to-end infrastructure that supports USV operations

● Assume leadership of assigned projects from conceptualisation to deployment

● Work with our early-stage project team which will give you the opportunity to make a huge impact

● Support AO’s ethos to monitor and protect the ocean in a sustainable manner - you will have an influence on how the back-end systems scale to meet new challenges relating to performance, uptime and scale.

● Contribute to design architecture reviews, workshops and hackathons

● Develop user interfaces for interacting with USVs.

● Develop remote software enabling communication between vessel and remote operations centres.

● Deploy software applications with Azure DevOps including CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.

What you’ll need

● UK citizenship. We will not sponsor visas.

● Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related engineering discipline with 3+ years of experience (particularly in hardware projects or systems)

● Proficiency in C#, HTML & CSS

● Experience writing unit tests

● Be someone who is passionate about innovation and collaborative problem solving and systems development who can add diversity of thought

● Experience with Python (desirable)

● Experience with Blazor, Angular, React or Spa frameworks (desirable)

● Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD) (desirable)

● Knowledge of networking (e.g. TCP/IP) (desirable)

● Experience with OT (e.g. PLC programming) (desirable)

● Experience in the maritime sector (desirable)

● A flexible approach and a willingness to apply yourself across the whole spectrum of this growing business

● Ability to become a valued member of this close knit team

Benefits/Compensation:

● £45-60K salary (depending on experience) 💷
