Overview
A rapidly growing energy trading and market-making firm is seeking an experienced Trade Surveillance & Monitoring Specialist to strengthen and enhance its market conduct and surveillance framework. This role will be instrumental in ensuring effective oversight of trading activity across listed and OTC derivatives markets, supporting a sophisticated trading environment that spans market making, proprietary trading, systematic strategies, and institutional liquidity provision.
The successful candidate will work closely with Compliance, Trading, Risk, Operations, and Technology teams to ensure surveillance controls remain robust, scalable, and aligned with evolving regulatory expectations and market structure developments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct trade surveillance and market conduct monitoring across futures, options, OTC derivatives, and related financial markets.
- Investigate alerts relating to potential market abuse scenarios, including spoofing, layering, front-running, wash trading, insider dealing, manipulation, and other suspicious trading activity.
- Review, calibrate, and enhance surveillance models, parameters, thresholds, and monitoring scenarios to improve effectiveness and reduce false positives.
- Monitor trading activity across major global exchanges and trading venues, ensuring compliance with applicable market rules and regulatory requirements.
- Produce detailed investigation reports, management information, and regulatory documentation where required.
- Support regulatory reviews, audits, enquiries, and examinations relating to surveillance and market conduct controls.
- Partner with Trading, Quantitative Research, Risk, Compliance, and Technology teams to understand trading strategies and ensure appropriate surveillance coverage.
- Assist in the implementation, optimisation, or enhancement of surveillance systems and monitoring frameworks.
- Provide subject matter expertise on market abuse regulations, surveillance best practices, and evolving regulatory expectations.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience within Trade Surveillance, Market Conduct, Compliance Monitoring, or Market Abuse functions.
- Strong understanding of exchange-traded and OTC derivatives markets, including futures and options products.
- Experience working within trading firms, market makers, proprietary trading firms, hedge funds, brokerages, exchanges, or investment banks.
- Deep knowledge of market abuse risks, surveillance methodologies, and behavioural monitoring techniques.
- Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks including MAR, MiFID II, FCA Market Conduct requirements, and related global regulations.
- Experience investigating complex trading behaviours and conducting detailed surveillance reviews.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret large datasets, trading patterns, and market activity.
- Excellent written communication skills and experience preparing regulatory-quality investigation reports.
Preferred Background
- Experience monitoring activity across major global exchanges and derivatives venues.
- Exposure to energy, commodities, futures, options, or electronic trading environments.
- Experience implementing, calibrating, or enhancing surveillance platforms such as SMARTS, SteelEye, Eventus, TradingHub, Nasdaq Surveillance, Bloomberg BTCA, or equivalent systems.
- Previous experience supporting market-making, algorithmic trading, systematic trading, or high-volume electronic trading businesses.
- Strong understanding of exchange rulebooks, market structure, and trading lifecycle controls.
