Senior Project Manager

Job Description

The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the timely and effective delivery of a portfolio of technology led projects, in support of AJ Bell’s strategic objectives.  The role of the Senior Project Manager is to work closely with the Sponsor of the portfolio to identify and prioritise projects within the portfolio and deliver individual projects through the delivery lifecycle; from project entry through to go-live and post implementation. The Senior Project Manager is an SME in their field, able to provide mentorship and management of less experienced Project Managers.  Projects are undertaken primarily to deliver technology driven change in support of the evolving technology landscape however given the wider financial backdrop experience of delivering IT change in a financially regulated environment would be an advantage.

What does the job involve?

  • Managing the delivery of a portfolio of technology led projects and initiatives
  • Managing the delivery of projects oneself and monitoring the progress of initiatives led by other Project Managers and SMEs
  • Prioritising and providing guidance on the selection of projects
  • Providing mentorship and/or line management responsibility of less experienced Project Managers
  • Delivering complex IT projects often working with third party suppliers to implement a hybrid of internal and external solutions
  • Establishing and maintaining effective and trusted relationships with internal stakeholders and external third-party suppliers
  • Co-ordinating and driving the collaboration of project resources to get the best from project teams
  • Producing and monitoring resource forecasts and budgets and where change is required, following appropriate change control procedures
  • Regularly reporting on the status and health of the portfolio and individual projects to sponsors and wider stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
  • Effectively managing project risk and dependencies, and assessing for any potential risk to consumer outcomes posed by the project
  • Ensure that all duties are carried out with the aim of protecting customers and improving customer experience 
  • Supporting and enabling the business to achieve its regulatory requirements, including consumer duty 

Competence, knowledge and skills

  • Strong technical knowledge and experience gained from a technology background
  • An ability to quickly understand technical topics
  • Proficient in the production of Business Cases, Project Initiation Documents and other project documentation
  • Ideally PRINCE2 Practitioner certification
  • Ideally experience of IT development methodologies e.g. Agile, SDLC
  • Experience of delivering in a financially regulated environment desirable
  • Financial services industry knowledge, e.g. pensions, investments and stockbroking, would be beneficial
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build and manage effective relationships
  • Good business/commercial knowledge
  • Analytical skills/problem solving
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • High attention to detail
