Power System Engineer

Role Overview

The Control Systems Engineer will support the design, modelling, implementation, and validation of HVDC control and protection systems. The role involves analysing customer technical requirements, performing power system simulations, developing control algorithms, and ensuring system performance through testing and validation. The engineer will collaborate with hardware, software, and system engineering teams to deliver reliable and compliant control system solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform clause-by-clause analysis of customer technical specifications and conduct gap analysis against standard solutions.
  • Define control system requirements for software architecture, development, and verification teams.
  • Develop control, protection, and sequencing strategies including start-up and shutdown sequences.
  • Perform power system modelling and simulations using tools such as PSSE, PSCAD, RSCAD, and EMTP-RV.
  • Develop plant and system models using MATLAB, PSCAD, and RSCAD and perform dynamic performance studies.
  • Conduct electromagnetic transient simulations and sub-synchronous oscillation studies.
  • Design control algorithms and state machines using MATLAB/Simulink and convert models into time-domain simulation libraries.
  • Perform protection coordination studies and tuning of control parameters to meet grid stability requirements.
  • Lead technical activities during Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Factory System Tests (FST) to validate control system performance.
  • Provide technical support to tendering, operations, contractual, and after-sales activities and respond to client technical queries.
  • Identify project risks and contribute to engineering design reviews and technical solutions.
  • Support R&D activities, development of new control strategies, product improvements, and technical publications.
  • Promote continuous improvement and reuse of standard solutions to improve efficiency and quality.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Power Electronics.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC power systems, HVDC technologies, and systems engineering principles.
  • Ability to interpret customer requirements and develop technical documentation and reports.

Technical Skills

  • Simulation Tools: PSSE, PSCAD, RSCAD, EMTP-RV
  • Modelling Tools: MATLAB, Simulink
  • Expertise: HVDC control systems, power system modelling, grid stability studies, protection coordination, and control algorithm development.

Standards Knowledge (Desirable)

IEC 61850, IEC 62351, IEC 12207, IEEE 15288, IEC 25010, IEC 27032, NERC CIP.
