Senior Project Leader - IT Public sector

ALTEN Ltd is looking for a Senior Project Manager to join our IT Business in London, UK - hybrid set up, mix of office/client site/remote.

The position to be considered for a solution of the group (Methods)

The role:

Within the Technical Direction, the Senior Project Manager will manage a team of engineers responsible for the execution and delivery of packages of work ranging from single resources in Time and Materials to large (teams of 50+ consultants) outcomes-based scopes of work. This includes responsibility for ensuring project activities are undertaken in accordance with the agreed quality, cost and delivery thresholds, and that they comply with customer requirements.

Main Duties and responsibilities:

Customer Management

  • Acts as the primary point of contact for the customer at work‐package level
  • Prepares and leads Project Review, Technical Review, and other required customer meetings under delegation from the Project Director
  • Ensures clear, effective communication with customers and internal stakeholders

Team management

  • Proactively monitors progress, workload, and resource utilisation. Leads recovery plans where needed.
  • Contributes to team selection and validates resource adequacy (where delegated)
  • Identifies resource needs and collaborates with the Project Director to ensure appropriate capability and capacity
  • Integrates new team members and ensures skills, training, and capability align with project needs
  • Maintains an up‐to‐date skills matrix and training catalogue with relevant Competency Centres
  • Contributes to career management process for consultants via the Competency Centres

Project/Delivery Management

  • Delivers the work package in line with the ALTEN Delivery Framework
  • Manages resources, performance, risks, issues, and service continuity
  • Owns financial performance, including cost control, change management, billing accuracy, and performance tracking
  • Ensures delivery meets schedule, quality, cost, and social value expectations (where applicable)
  • Maintains accurate project documentation, case studies, KPIs, and delivery evidence
  • Identifies improvement opportunities and ensures timely escalation of issues
  • Delegates tasks appropriately while retaining accountability for critical outcomes

Internal

  • Reports delivery progress, forecasts, and project performance metrics
  • Supports internal governance and monthly project reviews
  • Ensures health, safety, security, and compliance requirements are understood and applied
  • Identifies infrastructure, tooling, and working environment needs

Note: Other duties may be assigned from time to time

Experience required:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Engineering
  • 6+ years of experience as Technical Lead, Project Manager, Delivery Manager or integrated project Leadin a relevant industry
  • Technical Project Management background: estimation, project planning, risk management, and budget management
  • Must have knowledge of IT in Public sector
  • Demonstrable experience in coaching and leading teams globally, and managing autonomously relevant projects, being impactful in client meetings
  • Experience working independently, being result oriented, having an entrepreneurial mindset, and strong communication and interpersonal skills in stakeholder management and natural leadership
