Founding Engineer
AVIEL Intelligence is a 'hold my beer' company. Or maybe, given our UK roots, a 'hold my tea' company. We saw the ballooning 'scamdemic' afflicting people the world over with increasing mechanisation and cruelty and we decided to do something about it. Based in the UK, we're building the Anti-Scam Intelligence Company - intent on protecting people from scams via a technology-augmented intelligence approach.
We're throwing digital spanners into the gears of the global scam machine.
Revenue-generating - and backed by a stellar set of investors (Osney Capital, Fuel Ventures, Cambridge Angels) and advisors spanning financial crime, intelligence and cybersecurity professionals - now is the time to accelerate the building of our already formidable team. Our CEO Joe has (just about) been successfully dragged away from the keyboard (/voice prompting tool) and persuaded not to dive into code as much as he used to, so we're now on the hunt for a Founding Engineer - our first full-time tech hire, who'll be given an expansive brief and a critical level of ownership of our company's technical direction.
We're looking for that rarest combination of skillset and mindset that can make tech-driven startups like ours tick:
- A competent full stack technical skillset. You're as comfortable designing database schemas (then implementing them, re-imagining them and migrating them) as you are architecting multi-API services (then refactoring them, cost-optimising them and maybe even throwing them away).
- An arch-pragmatist. You know which parts of the systems you build need the clean code, exhaustive testing and careful refactoring to last years, and which ones only need to support our latest experimentation towards product-market fit.
- A grounded AI optimist. You realise that a 2026 startup is a brave new world where frontier-use of agentic coding tools aren't just an evolutionary workflow change, but table-stakes for startup viability (but the arch-pragmatist in you refrains from overdosing on the kool-aid just yet).
Specific Qualifications
Here's what we're looking for in applicants for the role:
- 5-10 years industry experience in a hands-on software engineering role.
- 2 years+ startup experience.
- Fluency in one of the following languages: Python, Typescript, Javascript.
- Experience building systems using a major cloud provider (GCP preferred, but not required).
- University degree in a technical discipline, ideally software engineering or computer science.
Mobility
In short, we're flexible. While we're happy to hire someone who's predominantly remote, but you'll need to be able to come to our office in Surrey, UK on a regular basis.
Benefits
We'll reward your hard work and technical wizardry with the following:
- Cash Salary: up to £130,000
- An unusually generous (EMI) stock options package of up to 2% equity for an outstanding candidate - reflecting the crucial nature of the role.
- A free reign on Claude Code credits for whatever your imagination (HUMAN or Claude-delegated) might dream up :)
- Your choice of Apple hardware to allow you to make the magic happen in your own preferred way!
