The role

We are looking for a full stack engineer whose main strength is backend development. You will take primary responsibility for Node.js and JavaScript services, PostgreSQL data models, REST APIs and a growing microservices estate, while contributing to React.js interfaces when a feature requires end-to-end ownership. The role sits close to live hotel deployments, IoT devices and the people who use our products.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain backend services using Node.js and JavaScript (TypeScript is a plus), with clear boundaries, robust error handling and production-ready documentation.
• Own PostgreSQL schema design, SQL queries, migrations, data integrity and performance for operational and time-sensitive product workloads.
• Develop well-structured REST APIs and event-driven integrations between Acacia applications, hotel systems, sensors, gateways and third-party platforms.
• Evolve our microservices architecture pragmatically, balancing service independence with operational simplicity and reliable data flows.
• Integrate IoT devices and building systems using MQTT, Modbus or Modbus TCP, HTTPS, JSON and vendor APIs; diagnose failures across software, network and device boundaries.
• Contribute to React.js frontends using JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, CSS and appropriate state management when delivering complete product features.
• Containerise and deploy services using Docker, Kubernetes and Helm; support CI/CD pipelines, container registries and environment configuration.
• Create unit, integration, API and end-to-end tests using tools such as Jest, Playwright and Postman; make testing part of delivery rather than a final step.
• Use AI-assisted development tools, including the Claude extension, to accelerate development, debugging, testing, documentation and technical problem-solving while maintaining code quality and engineering standards.
• Use Git and GitHub effectively through branches, pull requests, code reviews and GitHub Actions.
• Investigate live issues methodically, communicate impact clearly and carry fixes through validation and release.
• Work with the Product Manager and commercial team to translate customer and market needs into technical scope, estimates and delivery plans.
• Improve engineering standards through clear documentation, reusable patterns, technical review and constructive support for colleagues.

Essential experience and capability

• Strong commercial experience with Node.js and JavaScript (TypeScript is a plus) in production systems.
• Confident PostgreSQL and SQL capability, including relational modelling, migrations, query optimisation and data troubleshooting.
• Practical experience designing REST APIs and services within a microservices or distributed architecture.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm and CI/CD delivery workflows.
• Sound testing discipline across unit, integration, API and end-to-end levels.
• Working knowledge of React.js and modern browser technologies sufficient to deliver or diagnose end-to-end features.
• Strong debugging, communication and documentation skills; comfortable working from incomplete real-world evidence.

Useful additional experience

• IoT, sensor, building controls or industrial integration experience, particularly MQTT or Modbus TCP.
• Event-driven and real-time systems, including WebSocket-based communication.
• Python, SQLite, Grafana, Swagger or OpenAPI, Figma, Lucidchart or Whimsical.
• Hospitality technology, hotel operations, energy management or smart-building products.
• Experience of AI-assisted engineering tools used with appropriate review and security controls.

This is a hands-on role in a growing business. Priorities can move quickly as customer deployments, product development and partner opportunities evolve. You will be trusted to exercise judgement, communicate clearly and take ownership through to a practical result. Some travel to customer, supplier or project sites may be required.
