Software Engineer - Audio Systems
This is a rare opportunity to join a well-backed, early-stage tech company building something genuinely new in the audio space. With an experienced founding team and a greenfield roadmap, you’ll play a defining role in shaping a product from day one.
Role Overview:
- Location: London (4 days per week in-office)
- Package: Competitive salary + equity + healthcare
- Industry: Audio Technology / Embedded Systems / Applied ML
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Owning the end-to-end audio subsystem for a compact, low-power edge device and its supporting cloud pipeline
- Designing and optimising real-time audio capture, on-device DSP, and cloud-based post-processing
- Implementing and fine-tuning DSP components such as filtering, AGC/DRC, noise suppression, VAD, and echo control
- Building robust audio pipelines that perform reliably in noisy, unpredictable environments
- Balancing latency, compute, power, and audio quality to achieve production-ready performance
- Defining objective metrics and creating repeatable evaluation and regression testing frameworks (lab and field)
- Debugging issues across embedded, hardware, and cloud layers using profiling, logging, and lab instrumentation
- Collaborating closely with hardware, embedded, and ML engineers to integrate intelligent audio features
- Contributing to engineering best practices, documentation, and technical design discussions
Main Skills Needed:
- Proven experience delivering embedded audio systems (or significant audio subsystems) into production
- Strong fundamentals in DSP and hands-on tuning experience (e.g. AGC/DRC, filtering, noise suppression; AEC/beamforming advantageous)
- Strong C/C++ skills with confidence working under real-time and resource constraints
- Experience using Python (or similar) for analysis, benchmarking, and evaluation tooling
- Practical understanding of audio codecs and streaming/recording pipelines
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced startup environment with high ownership
- Strong communication skills and confidence working cross-functionally
Bonus if you have:
- Hardware-adjacent experience (I2S, ADC/DAC, DMA, SPI/I2C/UART, lab debugging tools)
- Microphone/speaker component selection or acoustic/mechanical insight
- Experience designing structured audio measurement methodologies
- Exposure to low-power / always-on detection or audio classification systems
- Familiarity with ML frameworks and deploying models into production pipelines
- Experience with established audio libraries or frameworks
What’s in It for You:
- A genuine greenfield opportunity to shape a product roadmap from the very beginning
- High ownership and autonomy within a small, experienced, low-ego team
- Direct impact on a product designed to disrupt its market
- Collaboration across embedded, hardware, cloud, and ML disciplines
- Modern tooling and fast iteration cycles to keep you focused on building
- Competitive salary, meaningful equity, and healthcare
- A collaborative, in-person culture designed to accelerate learning and decision-making
