Previous experience working on government projects highly desirable

Role Purpose

We are seeking a Senior Technical Business Analyst with recent, hands-on experience working directly with software development teams to help shape and deliver shared technical capabilities and enablers.

This is a highly technical BA role. You will operate at SFIA Level 5 (Ensure & Advise), working alongside engineers, architects, DevOps and platform teams to turn loosely defined technical epics into delivery ready user stories.

This is not a task taking role. The successful candidate will bring structure to ambiguity, challenge constructively, and actively shape technical solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Analysis & Delivery

• Analyse complex technical and business processes across software, DevOps, security, resilience and platform domains

• Take ownership of epics and poorly defined backlog items, refining them into delivery-ready features and user stories

• Define scope, assumptions, constraints, risks and dependencies across multiple technical initiatives

• Ensure stories meet Definition of Ready and provide continuous clarification during build and test

Collaboration with Engineering Teams (Essential)

• Work day-to-day with software engineers, DevOps engineers, architects and testers

• Facilitate technical design discussions and ensure shared understanding of requirements and proposed solutions

• Translate complex technical concepts so they are understood by both technical and non-technical stakeholders

• Actively challenge implementation approaches where required, based on user, operational and technical outcomes

Discovery, PoC & Early-Phase Work

• Support discovery and proof-of-concept activities, including:

o shaping hypotheses

o defining success measures

o identifying technical risks and assumptions

• Contribute to value cases, benefits mapping, and outcome-based metrics

Stakeholder Engagement

• Engage confidently with Product Managers, senior engineers, architects, delivery managers and business stakeholders

• Balance stakeholder needs with technical feasibility and delivery constraints

• Operate effectively across multiple initiatives, managing frequent context switching

Essential Skills & Experience

1. Recent Technical BA Experience

• Recent experience working directly with software development teams

• Clear examples of:

o technical user stories written

o outcomes delivered (not just responsibilities)

o systems or platforms worked on

2. Technical Awareness & Breadth

You do not need to be an engineer, but you must understand technical concepts and vocabulary.

Experience should include exposure to some of the following:

• Cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure)

• CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitLab, Jenkins)

• Containers & orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)

• APIs and service-based architectures

• DevOps ways of working

• Non-functional requirements (security, resilience, recoverability, testability)

3. Agile & Lean Delivery

• Strong Agile mindset with experience working in Scrum / Kanban teams

• Lean, outcome-focused approach to requirements and scope

• Comfortable working with ambiguity and evolving technical landscapes

4. Breadth of Experience

• Demonstrated experience across multiple systems, teams or technical domains

Desirable Experience

• Previous experience within UK Government or large, complex enterprises

• Experience shaping backlogs for newly formed engineering teams

• Exposure to security, platform or shared services environments
