Hardware and Electronics Engineer

About the Role

Are you passionate about building real hardware from the ground up? This is a hands-on opportunity for a Hardware and Electronics Engineer to design and prototype custom electronic devices that directly support national security operations.

You'll work on everything from circuit design and PCB layout to integrating wireless modules and 3D printing enclosures. Collaborating closely with Embedded software developers, you'll bring ideas from whiteboard to fully functional hardware.

Commuting Note: The on-site location is in northern Herefordshire, making it a viable daily commute from parts of Shropshire, including Ludlow and surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build custom electronic circuits using COTS modules and discrete components
  • Lay out PCBs using tools such as Altium or EasyEDA
  • Integrate wireless technologies: RF, GPS, GSM, Bluetooth, UWB
  • Design and 3D print enclosures for devices
  • Assemble prototypes: soldering, testing, debugging
  • Support Embedded software engineers with working hardware
  • Document builds and iterations
  • Participate in on-site integration, testing, and refinement

What You'll Bring

Essential:

  • Experience designing and assembling electronics
  • Proficiency with PCB layout tools and soldering (SMD and through-hole)
  • Familiarity with wireless communication modules (RF, GPS, Bluetooth, etc.)
  • Exposure to Embedded Microcontroller platforms (eg, Arduino, ESP32, STM32)
  • Skilled with multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
  • Ability to rapidly build and iterate functional prototypes
  • Working knowledge of mechanical enclosures and 3D printing

Desirable:

  • Experience producing small-scale PCB prototype runs
  • Understanding of power management in low-power or battery-operated devices
  • Awareness of EMI/EMC design considerations
  • Experience supporting field testing or operational deployments
  • Passion for making, hacking, or DIY electronics projects

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree or HND in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar
  • Hands-on project experience (including personal or hobbyist work) is highly valued
