Firmware Engineer

Job title: FPGA/Firmware Engineer

Location: Luton, Bedfordshire

Scope

The FPGA Engineer will contribute to the development, recovery, and certification support of FPGA-based designs for aerospace platforms, with a strong focus on legacy systems and board bring-up activities. The scope includes reverse engineering existing FPGA implementations, developing firmware from hardware requirements, and supporting integration of FPGA designs onto new or existing boards.

About the role

As an FPGA Engineer, you will work on the development and support of FPGA designs for legacy and new aerospace hardware. This includes reverse engineering existing designs where documentation may be limited, defining firmware requirements from hardware inputs, and implementing solutions using VHDL on Xilinx or Microchip devices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead FPGA development for legacy aerospace designs, including reverse engineering, and board bring‐up activities.
  • Develop firmware requirements from hardware requirements.
  • Work closely with hardware teams, supporting early‐phase board design and integration.
  • Ensure designs and deliverables comply with DO‐254 aligned processes.
  • Support generation of design/certification documentation (PHAC), verification strategy, and accreditation discussions (SOI) for low‐complexity designs.

Required experience

  • Strong FPGA experience using VHDL, including Xilinx or Microchip devices.
  • Proven experience working from limited or legacy design information.
  • Experience working in regulated aerospace or defence environments (DAL‐D).
  • Awareness of DO-254 or similar hardware certification standards is an advantage.
