About the Role

Akoni Technologies is hiring an experienced .NET Developer on behalf of our client, a specialist engineering organisation supporting the UK’s transition to a smarter, more flexible electricity system.

Our client delivers technical grid consultancy and advanced smart grid control solutions for major UK infrastructure projects. Its technology combines PLC-based control, SCADA, metering, protection systems and real-time data platforms to support grid-scale load management, export limitation, substation automation and dynamic network control.

As a .NET Developer, you will design, develop and enhance the software, database and integration systems that underpin these smart grid solutions. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced C# and .NET professional who wants to expand their expertise across Azure, IoT, cloud platforms, industrial control systems and real-world energy infrastructure.

You will work closely with the CTO and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop reliable, scalable systems that connect field devices, process operational data and provide meaningful insights to customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain applications using C# and the Microsoft .NET framework.
  • Develop software for IoT edge devices using .NET and Node-RED.
  • Design database architectures, schemas and data models.
  • Develop IoT monitoring and control systems using MQTT and Modbus.
  • Build and enhance APIs and integrations between devices, cloud platforms and business systems.
  • Develop and improve customer-facing SCADA and data visualisation platforms.
  • Create automated device provisioning, deployment and testing solutions.
  • Build reporting systems for customers, connected devices and internal operations.
  • Develop and optimise data-processing, export and integration pipelines.
  • Improve application performance, reliability, scalability and operational efficiency.
  • Support and maintain Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Manage, maintain and optimise SQL Server databases.
  • Maintain cloud-hosted and on-premises virtual machines.
  • Support mobile gateway infrastructure, VPN connectivity and device communications.
  • Manage SIM-based connectivity across deployed IoT devices.
  • Maintain and monitor MQTT messaging infrastructure.
  • Support and enhance Grafana dashboards and customer reporting tools.
  • Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing and commissioning activities.
  • Contribute to solution architecture, technical documentation and interface specifications for large distributed control projects.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • At least five years of commercial software development experience.
  • Strong development experience using C# and .NET.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server, database design and SQL development.
  • Experience developing and integrating REST APIs.
  • Strong knowledge of JSON and structured data exchange.
  • Experience integrating applications, devices or third-party systems.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A practical approach to developing and supporting production systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with software, electrical and control-system engineers.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with IoT technologies and connected-device platforms.
  • Knowledge of MQTT or Modbus.
  • Experience with Node-RED or comparable workflow and integration tools.
  • Experience with Grafana, SCADA or other data visualisation platforms.
  • Understanding of networking concepts, including VPNs, routing and gateways.
  • Experience working with industrial automation, energy systems or distributed control platforms.
  • Familiarity with automated deployment, testing and device provisioning.
  • Experience supporting Azure infrastructure and virtual machines.

What’s on Offer

  • Salary of £45,000–£55,000, depending on experience.
