A leading UK insurer is seeking a Lead AI Engineer to play a pivotal role in scaling enterprise AI across underwriting, claims and customer operations.

With multiple AI use cases already live across the business, this role will focus on advancing production-grade AI capability, particularly across Generative AI and NLP, ensuring measurable commercial impact and scalable technical delivery.

This is a hands-on leadership role combining engineering excellence, AI innovation and team development.

As a Lead AI Engineer, you will:

  • Lead and mentor a growing team of AI Engineers
  • Own end-to-end delivery of AI solutions from research and prototyping through to production deployment
  • Drive the development of advanced NLP and LLM-powered applications
  • Contribute to shaping the enterprise AI and GenAI roadmap
  • Ensure AI solutions are robust, scalable, secure and commercially measurable

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Set engineering standards and best practices for AI development
  • Guide architecture across NLP, LLM integration, and ML model deployment
  • Oversee model evaluation, monitoring, and continuous improvement
  • Mentor engineers and foster high-performance technical culture

Generative AI & NLP Delivery

  • Design and deploy production-grade LLM applications
  • Lead prompt engineering, fine-tuning and evaluation frameworks
  • Develop AI solutions supporting claims processing, underwriting insights and customer servicing
  • Integrate AI capabilities into enterprise systems and workflows

Business & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with senior stakeholders to identify high-value AI opportunities
  • Translate business challenges into scalable AI architectures
  • Measure and communicate impact in commercial terms

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience delivering AI solutions into production within Insurance or Financial Services
  • Strong expertise in NLP, Generative AI, and LLM implementation
  • Advanced programming capability (Python essential)
  • Experience taking research concepts through to scalable production systems
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills
  • Comfortable operating both strategically and hands-on technically
