Control System Senior Design Engineer - Sellafield

Altrad are currently looking for an experienced Control System Senior Design Engineer to join the Silos MSSS SEP1&2 CE&I Design Team, supporting projects associated with the Sellafield site.

This role will involve leading a team of Programmable Electronic System (PES) based Control System Design Engineers, delivering and checking control system designs and updates to meet functional and business requirements. The procurement, integration, installation and commissioning activities are undertaken by others and are therefore outside the scope of this position.

The role is based on a 37-hour working week over 4½ days, with a minimum of 3 days per week working from Hinton House, Warrington, Cheshire, and visits to the MSSS plant on the Sellafield site as required.

Key Deliverables:

• Lead and support a team of PES-based Control System Design Engineers in the delivery of control system design activities.

• Produce and check control system designs and modifications in accordance with project requirements and applicable engineering standards.

• Review, understand and challenge control system requirements to ensure robust design solutions.

• Contribute to the development of project programmes, schedules and cost estimates.

• Prioritise and assign work activities within the design team.

• Monitor and report design progress against project milestones and deliverables.

• Contribute to design assurance activities, technical reviews and governance processes.

• Provide design support during procurement and system integration activities.

• Provide technical design support during installation and commissioning phases.

• Support the development and mentoring of early career PES-based Control System Design Engineers.

• Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders across multidisciplinary teams.

• Deliver high-quality engineering outputs to challenging timescales and project targets.

Key Requirements / Qualifications:

Essential:

• HNC qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.

• Incorporated Engineer (IEng) professional registration.

• Current SC Security Clearance.

• Minimum 5 years' experience successfully delivering a PES-based Control System Lead Design Engineer role on external multidisciplinary projects from concept design through to handover.

• Working knowledge of relevant engineering standards applicable to control system design.

• Experience of SCADA and PLC control systems and associated network architectures.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a wide range of stakeholders.

• Experience contributing to project planning, programmes and estimates.

• Ability to prioritise, coordinate and allocate work within a design team.

• Experience supporting procurement, installation and commissioning activities from a design perspective.

• Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and developing junior engineers.

Desirable:

• BEng degree in a relevant engineering discipline.

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) professional registration.

• Minimum 7 years' experience successfully delivering PES-based Control System Lead Design Engineer roles on Sellafield multidisciplinary projects.

• Working knowledge of Sellafield engineering standards and processes.

• Experience producing detailed design packages including:

  • Drawings
  • CONCISE Specifications
  • Outline Installation Method Statements
  • CDM Design Risk Assessments
  • Residual Risk Assessments
  • Supporting Quality Documentation
  • Operations Documentation
  • Maintenance Documentation

• Experience working with PES-based Control System and servo drive interfaces.

• Proven experience delivering engineering projects from concept through to handover within highly regulated environments.
