Location: Bristol (hybrid 3 days on site)

Salary: £50,000 – £75,000 + bonus + benefits

Role Overview

As a Java Software Engineer, you will work on secure, mission-critical systems within Central Government and Defence environments. You will be part of agile, cross-functional teams delivering high-quality, scalable solutions across complex digital transformation programmes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing high-quality Java-based applications in secure environments
  • Writing clean, maintainable code supported by unit, integration, and automated tests
  • Producing low-level technical designs and contributing to solution architecture
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and resolve technical issues
  • Participating in agile delivery, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives
  • Supporting the delivery of highly secure digital transformation programmes
  • Applying best practices across DevOps, CI/CD, and test automation

This role will involve working closely with government stakeholders and may require time on secure client sites.

What They’re Looking For

  • Strong hands-on experience with Java and associated technologies
  • Experience with Spring Boot
  • Solid understanding of Test Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing
  • Experience with DevOps tooling and Continuous Delivery pipelines
  • Working knowledge of Docker and containerisation
  • Familiarity with open-source tools and frameworks
  • Strong understanding of non-functional requirements (performance, scalability, security)
  • Experience working in agile delivery environments
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • A proactive mindset with a desire to continuously develop

Security Clearance Requirement

This role requires eligibility for Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. To be considered, candidates must:

  • Be a sole British national (no dual nationality)
  • Have lived in the UK for the past 10 years continuously
  • Be eligible and willing to undergo DV clearance
