Principal Data Engineer – Cloud Consulting

Salary: £105,000 +

An established global consulting firm is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to join its growing cloud data practice. This is a client-facing, hands-on engineering role suited to someone who thrives on solving complex data challenges, building end-to-end cloud-native solutions, and driving greenfield projects in dynamic environments. You will work directly with clients to define requirements, architect and implement data solutions using modern AWS technologies, and support knowledge transfer to in-house teams. The ideal candidate is highly autonomous, curious, and comfortable working in both technical and consultative capacities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and deploy data pipelines using AWS tools such as S3, Redshift, Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, and DynamoDB

• Build robust ETL/ELT solutions with Matillion for cloud data warehousing

• Collaborate with client stakeholders to refine data needs and deliver production-ready solutions

• Contribute to infrastructure automation using CI/CD practices and infrastructure as code

• Work with various data formats including JSON, XML, CSV, and Parquet

• Create and maintain metadata, data dictionaries, and schema documentation

Required Experience:

• Strong experience with data engineering in a cloud-first environment

• Hands-on expertise in AWS data stack, particularly Glue, Redshift, S3, and Matillion

• Deep understanding of relational databases and data modelling

• Comfortable with Unix/Linux environments and scripting

• Familiar with data visualisation tools (e.g. QuickSight, Tableau, Looker, QlikSense)

Desirable:

• Experience with large-scale data technologies (Spark, Hadoop)

• Exposure to microservices/APIs for data delivery

• AWS certifications (e.g. Solutions Architect, Big Data Specialty)

• Interest or background in Machine Learning
