Technical Architect
Technical Architect
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Work Pattern: Hybrid, minimum 3 days onsite at Cobalt Business Park
Salary: £60,000 to £65,000 + up to 15% sign-on bonus + 8% annual bonus
Industry: Technology Consulting / Digital Transformation
About the Role
Our client is one of the world’s leading technology and consulting organisations, delivering some of the UK’s most complex digital transformation programmes across government, defence, financial services, and enterprise-scale environments. They combine the scale of a global consultancy with hands-on engineering delivery, giving architects genuine influence over large-scale technical outcomes.
They are now looking for a Technical Architect with a strong engineering background who can bridge hands-on delivery with architecture design and stakeholder engagement.
This is not a pure governance or documentation role. They want someone who has come from a software engineering, DevOps, or full stack development background and has moved into architecture within the last 12 to 18 months. You’ll still be close to delivery teams, technical decision-making, and modern engineering practices.
The environment is fast-paced, delivery-focused, and heavily centred around complex enterprise systems, cloud platforms, and scalable architecture design.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Designing and reviewing technical architectures across enterprise-scale programmes
- Translating business and technical requirements into actionable solution designs
- Working closely with engineering teams in Agile and DevOps-led environments
- Supporting decisions around infrastructure, networking, security, and system software
- Presenting solutions into technical governance and architecture review boards
- Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Contributing hands-on where required across delivery and implementation activities
- Mentoring junior engineers and supporting technical best practice across teams
What They’re Looking For
- Minimum 5 years of overall technical experience
- Strong background in software engineering, full stack development, or DevOps
- Recent architecture experience, ideally within the last 12 to 18 months
- Experience defining both functional and non-functional requirements
- Strong understanding of architectural patterns and design principles
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation and solution designs
- Comfortable operating in customer-facing environments
- Experience leading small technical teams or acting as a technical SME
Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly valuable:
- Enterprise software development
- DevOps and CI/CD environments
- Functional and non-functional testing
- Technical governance and architecture review boards
- Cloud-native or distributed systems environments
Environment & Project Work
You’ll be joining a major technology and innovation hub delivering high-impact programmes across both public and private sector clients. The work is varied, technically challenging, and focused on solving real operational and business problems at scale.
The role offers exposure to modern engineering practices, large delivery teams, enterprise architecture, and some of the most recognisable transformation programmes currently happening in the UK market.
Package & Benefits
- £60,000 to £65,000 base salary
- Up to 15% sign-on bonus
- 8% annual bonus
- Hybrid working model
- 25 days annual leave
- Private medical insurance
- Additional paid volunteering days
- Access to structured training and career progression
Clearance Requirements
Due to the nature of the projects, candidates must be eligible to undergo Security Clearance. This requires:
- Minimum 5 years continuous UK address history
- No absences from the UK exceeding 30 consecutive days during that period
Who This Role Suits
This role is ideal for someone moving from senior engineering into architecture who still wants to stay close to technology delivery rather than moving into purely strategic or governance-heavy architecture work.
It would particularly suit candidates from DevOps, Java, cloud engineering, or full stack engineering backgrounds looking to step further into enterprise architecture responsibilities.
