IT Field Engineer

We’re working with an established technology business that is looking for an experienced IT Field Engineer to join its technical services team.

This is a varied, hands-on role where no two days are necessarily the same. You’ll work across different client environments, solving technical problems, supporting infrastructure and projects, and building strong relationships with the people you support.

If you enjoy getting out from behind a service desk, meeting clients, taking ownership of technical issues and being trusted to find the right solution, this could be an excellent next step.

The Role

As an IT Field Engineer, you’ll provide hands-on technical support across a range of client sites throughout the UK.

You’ll be the technical face of the business for many of its clients, so you’ll need to combine strong technical ability with excellent communication and customer service skills.

You’ll deal with everything from day-to-day infrastructure issues and user support through to installations, migrations, upgrades and project work.

The role will suit someone who enjoys variety, is comfortable working independently and likes being presented with a problem and figuring out how to solve it.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Providing hands-on IT support across client sites, resolving issues that require an onsite presence.
  • Troubleshooting hardware, software, networking and infrastructure issues.
  • Building trusted relationships with client contacts, users and senior stakeholders.
  • Taking ownership of technical issues from initial diagnosis through to resolution.
  • Supporting installations, upgrades, migrations, deployments and infrastructure projects.
  • Taking responsibility for smaller technical projects and changes.
  • Investigating recurring problems and identifying ways to improve client environments.
  • Working alongside wider technical teams to resolve more complex issues.
  • Maintaining accurate technical documentation and client environment information.
  • Responding to urgent and short-notice client requirements when necessary.
  • Using AI tools and automation to improve efficiency and reduce repetitive tasks.
  • Participating in an out-of-hours on-call rota.

The Technical Environment

We’re looking for a strong all-round IT Engineer with practical experience across areas such as:

  • Microsoft 365
  • Entra ID / Azure
  • Windows Server
  • Active Directory
  • Networking, switching, firewalls and Wi-Fi
  • Endpoint and hardware troubleshooting
  • Infrastructure support
  • Backup technologies
  • Cyber Essentials / Cyber Essentials Plus

Experience within an MSP or managed services environment would be particularly beneficial, as would experience supporting multiple customers and technical environments.

You don’t need to be an expert in every technology listed above. What’s important is that you have a solid infrastructure background, strong troubleshooting ability and the confidence to get involved and find solutions.

The Person

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • A confident, experienced IT Engineer who enjoys working directly with clients.
  • Naturally hands-on and enjoys solving technical problems.
  • Comfortable working independently and managing their own workload.
  • Proactive and willing to investigate issues rather than simply applying temporary fixes.
  • Able to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical people.
  • Comfortable dealing with senior client stakeholders.
  • Organised, professional and good at documenting their work.
  • Happy working across different environments and technologies.
  • Interested in using AI and automation to work smarter and improve service delivery.
  • Flexible regarding travel and able to respond to changing client requirements.

A full UK driving licence is essential, as regular travel to client sites will be required.

Why Consider the Role?

This isn’t a role where you’ll be sitting behind the same desk dealing with the same issues every day.

You’ll work across a variety of clients, technologies and environments, giving you the opportunity to broaden your technical experience while developing your client-facing and project skills.

It’s a role for someone who wants to be trusted to get things done, rather than simply waiting for the next ticket to arrive.

If you’re an experienced IT Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer or Field Engineer looking for a more varied, client-facing position with genuine responsibility, we’d be keen to hear from you.
