Our platform is used by performing arts centres, museums, festivals, universities, and cultural organisations around the world. We’re a remote-first, values-led team backed by the stability of Volaris Group, with a culture that’s collaborative, supportive, and always evolving through feedback.
About the role
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can take ownership of complex, production systems while applying AI in a disciplined, engineering-led way. You will work across two equally important areas:
- Designing and delivering AI-enabled features and workflows that create real product and commercial value
- Incrementally modernising a complex PHP-based enterprise platform to keep it robust, scalable, and future-ready
This is a senior, hands-on role with real technical ownership. Success requires strong engineering judgement, the ability to operate in complex systems, and the confidence to own architectural decisions end-to-end. Working closely with the Product Owner and Head of Engineering, you will make pragmatic architectural decisions that balance innovation, delivery speed, security, and long-term maintainability.
AI is central to how we build. We seek engineers who create robust software features by embracing AI-first engineering practices and who are capable of integrating AI responsibly and effectively within customer-facing features and internal workflows.
What you’ll do
- Design and deliver clean, secure, maintainable, and performant end-to-end solutions using AI-accelerated coding across frontend, backend, and infrastructure
- Support the uplift of architectural components, backend systems, and enterprise-grade functionality
- Use AI tools for code generation, code review assistance, test automation, design translation, and rapid prototyping
- Contribute to evolving AI-enabled development processes and patterns across the business
- Lead development of new product add-ons with clear commercial value
- Assist in improving system performance, reliability, and scalability
- Design AI/LLM-powered workflows with strong guardrails for security and reliability
- Build REST APIs and modular services, including scalable inference-backed services where appropriate
- Package and deploy applications using Docker/Kubernetes
- Support AWS-based deployments with a focus on reliability and scalability
- Collaborate on CI/CD pipelines and automation
- Work closely with product, leadership, and customer-facing teams
- Contribute to shared patterns, documentation, and continuous improvement
What you’ll bring
- 7+ years building and maintaining production software on cloud-native platforms
- Strong backend engineering experience with server-side frameworks like Laravel/CodeIgniter (PHP 8.2+), alongside experience in related technologies such as TypeScript, React, Node.js, JavaScript
- Deep understanding of relational databases
- Experience working with complex business logic and legacy systems
- Hands-on experience using AI tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) for Software Development and agentic development workflows.
- Experience integrating AI or LLM-based capabilities into applications or workflows
- Solid grounding in software architecture, system design, containerisation and cloud platforms (AWS)
- Confidence working with legacy systems while driving pragmatic improvement
- Clear communication skills and a strong sense of technical ownership
Nice to have
- Experience with microservices, security best practices, or SaaS products
- Familiarity with LLMs, RAG pipelines, or vector search
- Background in creative technology or the arts & culture sector
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies, Git-based workflows and iterative release cycles
Why join Artifax?
- Shape products used by cultural organisations worldwide
- Work on meaningful, technically challenging problems with real ownership
- Be part of a collaborative, remote-first engineering culture
- Explore responsible, real-world applications of AI
- Enjoy stability, autonomy, and opportunities to influence long-term technical direction
Application Requirement
Please include a short cover letter (max 300–400 words) including details of:
- A production system you’ve owned end-to-end
- Your experience working on the modernisation of legacy systems or complex business logic.
- An example of how you’ve used AI tools in the Software Development lifecycle or AI/LLM in a real product/workflows
- Why you feel this role is a good fit for your experience
