Technical Director

🎮 Tech Director (Unreal Engine) — Astrid

UK or Europe Remote

Astrid is an entertainment venture building fantastical, meaningful worlds powered by creativity, craft, and innovative tech. We're deep into our first original game universe — and we’re assembling a founding team who want to push boundaries, explore new systems of play, and have a genuinely great time doing it.

We’re looking for a hands‐on Unreal Engine Technical Director who thrives on prototyping, problem‐solving, and shaping both the technology and the culture of a new studio.

If you love emergent systems, rapid iteration, and building world‐class engineering teams from the ground up — let’s talk.

⭐ What You’ll Do

Be a founding force

  • Join our small leadership group and help shape Astrid’s values, technical vision, and long‐term strategy.
  • Work hands‐on inside Unreal Engine on early gameplay prototypes, tools, and systems.

Drive engineering excellence

  • Build and lead a high‐performing engineering team — hiring, mentoring, and fostering a collaborative culture.
  • Define the studio’s technical roadmap, development workflows, coding standards, and engineering best practices.

Invent the future of play

  • Partner with creative leaders to bring innovative, systemic gameplay experiences to life.
  • Rapidly prototype ideas that push the boundaries of emergent, social, and sandbox‐style gameplay.

Own quality, scalability & delivery

  • Vet new technologies, integrations, and pipelines.
  • Identify technical risks early and keep stakeholders informed and aligned.
  • Ensure the game is built on robust architecture, clean code, and sustainable production practices.

🎯 What You Bring

  • 5+ years professional game development experience (Unreal Engine strongly preferred).
  • 3+ years in a senior/lead/technical leadership role.
  • Strong background in emergent gameplay, systemic design, or social/sandbox mechanics.
  • Experience across PC/console (mobile is a bonus).
  • Excellent technical judgment — you know when to prototype fast and when to build for the long run.
  • Calm, clear communicator who elevates teams, not just products.
  • Passion for crafting meaningful, playful worlds.

Bonus points if you love Minecraft, Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, or other simulation/sandbox‐driven experiences.

✨ Why Astrid?

  • Join at the beginning — shape the studio, the tech, and the experience.
  • Build truly new worlds, not another sequel.
  • A culture focused on collaboration, creativity, and fun.
  • Massive room for impact, ownership, autonomy, and career growth.
