Senior Java Backend Developer

We're working with an innovative UK software business that develops complex engineering applications used by some of the world's leading organisations in the energy sector. As the business continues to grow, they're looking to appoint a Senior Java Backend Developer to join their highly experienced engineering team.

This is an opportunity to work on genuinely challenging software rather than high-volume transactional systems. You'll be building scalable backend services and APIs that process large volumes of engineering data, helping transform complex information into meaningful, real-world solutions.

Working alongside experienced software engineers, you'll contribute to architecture, influence technical decisions and help shape the future of a market-leading product.

What You'll Be Doing

• Designing and developing scalable Java backend applications and REST APIs
• Building robust, maintainable and secure software solutions
• Working with complex, data-intensive systems
• Collaborating closely with frontend engineers and product teams
• Contributing to architecture and technical design decisions
• Improving performance, scalability and code quality
• Writing clean, well-tested and maintainable code
• Mentoring other developers and contributing to engineering best practice

What We're Looking For

• Strong commercial Java development experience
• Experience designing and building REST APIs
• Strong SQL and relational database knowledge
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
• Experience working within Agile environments
• Linux command line experience
• A passion for writing clean, secure and maintainable code

Desirable Experience

• Neo4j or other graph databases
• Docker and Kubernetes
• AWS or Azure
• CI/CD pipelines
• Microservices architecture
• Experience within engineering, industrial, manufacturing or other data-intensive environments

Package

• Up to £90,000 depending on experience
• Flexible Hybrid working
• Leatherhead office
• Full-time, permanent position
