What you'll be doing:
- Analysing new requirements and creating design records specifying capability upgrades required to the CMS-1 product
- Producing detailed design from requirements, interface documents, and the top-level project system architecture
- Overseeing the porting of the existing application system, refactoring and evaluating functionality and identification the new areas of work
- Implementing/ maintaining the code as stated in the design documents and requirements and support any technical investigations
- Effectively collaborating within a team and to be able to break down software tasks for other team members and assist them as necessary
- Producing test strategy for informal testing during development and for formal test documentations
- Raising/ resolving issues with system design authority and project managers
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
- Proficiency in software development, including designing and implementing solutions in Ada, with a strong ability to write and maintain technical design documents. Ada is the preferred language, but training will be provided for a strong candidate.
- Experience working with software configuration tools, for configuration control
- Comprehensive understanding of the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis to deployment and maintenance
Desirable:
- Experience using Dimensions tool
- Proven ability to define and oversee system upgrades for complex, software-intensive, real-time embedded systems
- Hands-on experience in software integration and testing using representative hardware to validate functionality and reliability
Applicants should ideally be Degree qualified or have equivalent experience, likely to be in a technology, engineering, science or IT related discipline.
Applicants should be a Chartered Engineer or hold another equivalent professional registration with a relevant institution.

The Combat Management Systems team:
The Combat Management System (CMS) produced by BAE Systems (as part of the Naval Ships Business Unit) have teams with more than 45 years of experience in the design, development and integration of state-of-the-art naval combat systems for every major surface ship and submarine in the Royal Navy's fleet and they're in operation with more than 20 navies around the world. It forms the 'brains' of complex warships and submarines, which crew members depend on to operate effectively in the world's most difficult and dangerous environments. The integration of these complex platforms is also part of our work to allow all elements of the ship to work together.
We're currently involved in some of the most complex engineering projects in the UK, including integrating the mission system on the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers and are developing combat systems for the next generation of naval platforms, Type 26 Global Combat Ships. In our latest program, we are also integrating our CMS into the CMS of a foreign Navy to integrate our capabilities with their systems.
