About BFB Labs
BFB Labs provides digital therapeutics for better youth mental health and is revolutionising the way children access and engage with therapeutic support. Our products fuse evidence-based therapeutic approaches with immersive and responsible gaming, making them highly engaging, scientifically robust, and cost-effective.
We build evidence-based health tech that meets the highest clinical standards, fundamentally improving the lives of young people and families. Previously backed by the NHS and Innovate UK, we work in partnership with the NIHR-funded medtech cooperative, the University of Reading, and other leading figures in healthcare and academia. As a multi-award-winning, female-led, early-stage enterprise, we offer a driven, go-getting culture where you will play a foundational role in growing our team and scaling our impact.
This is a pivotal, "working" leadership role. You will sit at the intersection of product strategy and technical execution, reporting directly to the Head of Product. You will spend roughly 50% of your time writing and optimising high-performance code for our flagship Unreal Engine application, and 50% managing system design, conducting code reviews, and mentoring our ambitious mid-level development team.
You don't need to be a pre-existing expert in everything we build, but you must have the architectural maturity to oversee a diverse stack. If you are an exceptional C++ developer looking to step up into management, define engineering culture, and own cross-platform architecture, this is your next role.
- Therapeutic Apps: Unreal Engine / C++ and Unity / C#
- Data Platform & Hub: Python / AWS / React Native/RestAPIs
- Lead & Architect: Own the technical roadmap and architectural integrity across our therapeutic games and data platform. Ensure data security, clinical compliance, and cloud stability.
- Hands-on Development: Drive core feature development and performance optimisations across our flagship therapeutic products.
- Code Quality & Governance: Establish weekly code review workflows. Set code styling, documentation, and testing frameworks to elevate our mid-level developers across Unreal/C++, Unity/C#, and Python environments.
- Product Release Operations: Oversee app store deployment pipelines, compliance requirements, and build distribution.
- Product Partnership: Collaborate closely with the Head of Product to transform user requirements into feasible, elegant technical solutions.
- An Unreal Expert: You have deep, hands-on experience building, debugging, and optimising complex applications or games using Unreal Engine and C++.
- Engine-Agnostic Mindset: You treat engines as tools. While C++ is your native language, you have the flexibility to jump into Unity (C#) codebases to provide structural logic reviews and guide our game developer.
- A Natural Mentor: You genuinely enjoy unlocking the potential of mid-level engineers. You know how to give constructive, actionable feedback in code reviews.
- Systems Thinker: You understand the fundamentals of data flow, APIs, and cloud architecture (Python/AWS). You care about how an app talks to a database just as much as how it renders on screen.
- Outcome-Driven: You prioritise building reliable, stable software that serves vulnerable users over endlessly over-engineering complex code.
- Purpose-Driven Work: The code you write and oversee will directly support young people going through clinical mental health pathways.
- Great Perks: 28 days of annual leave (plus bank holidays)—which grows by 1 extra day for every year you're with us (up to 5 additional days). You'll also get access to the company pension scheme, the flexibility to work remotely for up to one week twice a year (taken as separate sessions), and we usually top it off with an extra 3 discretionary days off over the Christmas period so you can fully recharge.
- Hybrid Flexibility: Work from our fantastic co-working space in Farringdon (Central London) 3 days a week, with the remainder remote. We value flexibility and are open to discussing individual productive arrangements.
- Strategic Advisory Support: You won’t be marooned; you will work alongside our experienced Fractional Tech Advisor for high-level governance and strategic onboarding support.
- A Vibrant Culture: Join a diverse, inclusive, and multi-award-winning team during an exciting early-stage growth phase.
We are looking for the right person to start ASAP . Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
To apply, please send your CV along with a Cover Letter explaining why you are perfectly suited to this role to nabeena@bfb-labs.com .
