Backend Engineer - Insurance Automation Platform (Remote, UK)

BJAK is building an automation platform for insurance operations. The platform supports quotes, renewals, policy issuance, endorsements, claims, payments, customer requests and insurer follow-ups.

We are looking for Backend Engineers who can build reusable systems and backend foundations that scale across workflows, products and markets — not just one-off features. This role works remotely while collaborating closely with our Malaysia-based engineering and operations teams.

The Mission

Build backend foundations that automate insurance operations across products, teams and countries.

What You’ll Own

  • Build backend services for BJAK’s insurance automation platform.
  • Create reusable workflow logic for quote, policy, claims and endorsement flows.
  • Improve APIs, data models, event-driven workflows and system reliability.
  • Reduce repeated manual operations through stronger backend systems.
  • Work closely with product, operations, frontend, QA and DevOps teams.
  • Improve monitoring, logging, documentation and maintainability.
  • Help scale platform capabilities across multiple regional markets.

What We’re Looking For

  • Backend engineering experience in production systems or platforms.
  • Strong system-thinking ability and comfort simplifying messy workflows.
  • Good understanding of APIs, databases and backend service architecture.
  • Able to build reusable systems without unnecessary over-engineering.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous and fast-moving environments.
  • Strong ownership and follow-through on long-term improvements.
  • Practical, collaborative and low ego.

The Kind of Builder We Want

  • Thinks in systems and operational flows, not only tickets.
  • Improves systems incrementally and pragmatically.
  • Comfortable navigating operational and workflow complexity.
  • Serious about reliability, maintainability and scalability.
  • Focused on building long-term platform value.

This Role Is Not For

  • Engineers who only want isolated feature tasks.
  • People who dislike internal systems or platform engineering work.
  • Engineers who over-engineer before understanding business needs.
  • People who depend on perfectly defined requirements.
  • Engineers who avoid improving legacy or operational systems.

Success Looks Like

  • Insurance workflows become more automated and reusable.
  • Backend systems become easier to maintain and scale.
  • Manual operational work reduces significantly.
  • New products and regional flows launch faster.
  • The platform grows stronger and more reliable as BJAK scales.

Interview Process

We assess candidates based on culture fit, working style and backend/platform thinking. The process includes application review, interview rounds and a technical assessment or system design discussion.
