Microsoft Fabric Consultant

Microsoft Fabric Consultant

The Microsoft Fabric Migration Consultant will work with the Lead Data Engineer and the analytics team to assist with the migration of legacy data flows, reporting datasets and supporting processes into the Microsoft Fabric environment.

The role will focus on migrating existing data pipelines and reporting dependencies, cleansing and preparing data, rebuilding or optimising dataflows, supporting Fabric lakehouse and warehouse structures, and assisting in the development of a reliable semantic model for Power BI reporting.

The successful candidate will be hands-on, delivery-focused and comfortable working at pace to leave a stable, documented and supportable Fabric reporting foundation by the end of the three-month engagement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Review existing legacy data flows, datasets, reports and dependencies to understand what must be migrated, rebuilt, retired or documented.
  • Migrate priority data ingestion and transformation processes into Microsoft Fabric using appropriate Fabric capabilities, including Dataflows Gen2, pipelines, lakehouse, warehouse and related services where required and as directed.
  • Assist with data cleansing, reconciliation and quality checks to ensure migrated outputs are accurate, consistent and trusted by business users.
  • Assist in the design and build of a robust Power BI semantic model, including tables, relationships, measures, reusable definitions and clear naming conventions.
  • Support the transition of existing Power BI reports to the new Fabric-backed data model, ensuring reports remain accurate and fit for use.
  • Document migrated data flows, transformation logic, data definitions, assumptions and known issues so that the internal team can maintain the environment after the contract ends.
  • Work collaboratively with analytics, technology and business stakeholders to prioritise migration work, resolve blockers and provide regular progress updates.

Key Deliverables/ Success Measures

Success in the role will be demonstrated through:

  • Priority legacy data flows successfully migrated into Microsoft Fabric and operating reliably.
  • Clear reconciliation between legacy outputs and migrated Fabric outputs, with any differences investigated and explained.
  • A clean, well-structured semantic model that supports key Power BI reporting requirements.
  • Existing Power BI reports connected to the appropriate Fabric-backed datasets or prepared for transition with clear guidance.
  • Reduced manual intervention in recurring data preparation and reporting processes.
  • Practical documentation covering data sources, transformations, refresh dependencies, model structure and support considerations.
  • Effective knowledge transfer to the internal team before the end of the three-month engagement.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Practical experience delivering Microsoft Fabric solutions, ideally including migration from legacy data flows, data warehouses or reporting platforms.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of Power BI, including semantic models, relationships, DAX measures and report dependencies.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience profiling, cleansing, transforming and validating data from multiple sources.
  • Experience with data ingestion, transformation and orchestration concepts, including ETL/ELT approaches and pipeline dependencies.
  • Ability to document data flows, transformation logic, assumptions and support requirements clearly for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to work independently on a time-limited delivery engagement, prioritising work and escalating risks promptly.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience using Microsoft Fabric is essential.
  • Experience with Dataflows Gen2, Fabric pipelines, notebooks, Power Query/M or similar transformation tools.
  • A track record of successful data migration projects.
  • Experience with Python and PySpark desirable.
  • Understanding of data governance, lineage, access controls and naming standards within a modern analytics environment.
  • Previous experience in media, broadcasting, digital content, subscription or another audience-led organisation would be beneficial.

Personal Attributes

  • Delivery-focused - able to make practical decisions and maintain momentum within a short contract window.
  • Structured and methodical - approaches migration work carefully, with strong attention to dependencies, validation and documentation.
  • Collaborative - works effectively with internal stakeholders to understand current processes, agree priorities and support handover.
  • Pragmatic problem-solver - able to resolve messy data, unclear legacy logic and migration issues without over-engineering.
  • Clear communicator - keeps stakeholders informed of progress, risks, decisions and trade-offs.
  • Quality-minded - committed to accurate data, traceable logic and reliable reporting outputs.

Comfortable operating independently while knowing when to seek input or escalate decisions
