Join our client as a PostgreSQL Site Reliability Engineer, where you’ll support the stability, performance, and resilience of large-scale, business-critical database environments. In this senior technical role, you’ll help shape the direction of database reliability engineering—introducing modern SRE practices, driving automation, and ensuring systems remain highly available, scalable, and secure. This is an opportunity to influence engineering standards, guide operational excellence, and lead initiatives that safeguard essential data platforms.

Duties of the PostgreSQL SRE will include:

• Monitor, maintain, and optimise core PostgreSQL platforms to ensure availability, performance, and operational continuity.
• Apply modern SRE and software engineering principles—automation, scripting, observability, and repeatable processes—to enhance system reliability and reduce manual work.
• Diagnose and resolve complex incidents, ensuring rapid recovery while reducing root-cause recurrence through proactive engineering improvements.
• Lead capacity planning, performance tuning, resource optimisation, and preventative maintenance activities across mission-critical database platforms.
• Develop automation scripts and tooling (Bash, Python, PowerShell, Ansible, etc.) to streamline operational processes and uplift system resilience.
• Support database migrations, tooling adoption, and environment modernisation across enterprise systems.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, and architecture teams to embed reliability, scalability, and performance best practices throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
• Stay current with emerging technology trends—containers, cloud, automation, database reliability—and contribute to internal technical communities.

To be successful progressing in the PostgreSQL SRE, experience should include:

• Strong experience in PostgreSQL Database Administrator / Database Engineer
• Exposure to other enterprise databases i.e. Oracle, MS-SQL etc.
• Proven background implementing or promoting SRE practices in large or complex environments.
• Practical experience with containers and Kubernetes.
• Hands-on use of DevOps and automation tools such as Git, JIRA, Ansible, and database-focused CI/CD tooling.

• Scripting proficiency in Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar.
• Experience with database migration tools and large-scale data movement.
• Working knowledge of configuration management (e.g., Chef, Ansible) for database server estate management.
• Understanding of risk, controls, change management, and technology governance in regulated or mission-critical environments.
• Prior leadership experience—setting clear objectives, coaching peers, or guiding structured workstreams.
