Job summary
This role will be a secondment role with a development path outlined to allow the candidate to gain knowledge and experience as a Development Team Lead.
This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to work with Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Digital Development and Integration Team.
The Development Team consists of technical staff specialising in support, security, maintenance, development or management of the Trusts integration architecture and associated platforms.
The Development Team Lead is a key part of the Development team, the post will act as a lead within the team for systems integration, interface and development management or support. The post holder provides design, support or advice to the Senior Digital Development Lead and development team on current or new system integrations, interfaces or developments
This position offers the opportunity for hybrid working with 2-3 days on site / home working depending on the business need.
Candidates will be expected to work their 37.5 hours flexibly to meet business requirements. Evenings, nights and weekends work may also be expected as part of a safer and more effective service delivery. Occasional on call duties may be required.
Main duties of the job
This role is responsible for the day to day line management of specialist technical development staff, this includes 1:1s, PDPs and disciplinary matters as delegated by the Development team manager. The Development Team Lead is responsible for leading a team providing systems integration or development support covering a variety of technologies and responsibilities, this includes: -
- Support and maintenance
- Daily and scheduled tasks
- Essential patches or bug fixes
- Messaging Standards such as HL7, XML, JSON
- Integration Engine support, maintenance and alerting
- Highly complex issue or problem resolution
- Root cause analysis
- Licences, contracts and Vendor management
- Attend scoping meetings for integration and development requirements
We're looking for someone with strong development, organisational and communication skills, as well as excellent attention to detail. You'll have experience of IT within Healthcare or in a large IT department with a large system portfolio,
This is a very team-focused environment, so you'll need to be adaptable and enjoy team work too. High levels of personal resilience is a must as this is a very fast paced and at times challenging environment. Any experience of team leadership/supervision is extremely advantageous.

The Development team lead is a source of knowledge and advice for project teams. This includes providing expertise on licensing, systems integration, ongoing support, resource projections or costs, timelines and advising on business case development.
The post holder will take a lead role in specialist projects such as upgrades to key systems that impact across clinical and non-clinical areas, this includes downtime to be agreed with multiple stakeholders.
The Development team lead will support the programme teams in the planning of projects and liaise or work alongside application vendors, internal stakeholders and other technical experts to do so.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Educated to Degree level or equivalent experience
- Management/leadership qualification or equivalent experience
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Healthcare Systems Integration related qualifications or equivalent experience in HL7, CDA, Data Transformations and Message Interactions
- Software development / Systems Integration development qualification or equivalent experience
- IT Service Management qualification
- Intersystem Health Share training / certification
Experience
- Experience of facilitating change in practice to improve services
- Significant experience leading the design and development of highly complex systems integration solutions.
- Understanding and practical experience using various development methodologies (Waterfall, Agile etc).
- Experience of working in a project management environment, also working with multi-vendor teams, on and off-shore.
- Relevant Information Technology service design, planning, development, deployment, operations and technical support experience.
- Proven experience of working in a management/leadership role
- Experience of managing / leading a team
- Experience of working within an NHS IT Department environment.
